DeMint Calls for Adherence to Conservative Principles (DeMint says no to more Specters, Crists)
Roll Call via CQ ^ | 2010-09-19 | Melanie Starkey

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who has bucked the establishment to support tea party candidates, said Sunday that his party is “dead” if it wins a majority this fall and doesn’t stick to conservative principles.

Republicans held majorities in both chambers, and George W. Bush was in the White House when DeMint moved from the House to the Senate in 2005. But he said the party didn’t live up to its promises.

“Republicans didn’t do what we said we were going to do,” he said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “We spent too much, we borrowed too much. And frankly, if we get the majority again, even if it’s just in the House, and we don’t do what we say, I think the Republican Party is dead.”

When asked about his declaration last week that electing conservative candidates is more important than winning a majority, he said the important thing is spending. “Let me clarify what I mean by conservative,” he said. “I’m just talking about common-sense people who don’t think balancing a checkbook is a radical idea. That’s what we’re looking for now, because the people in Washington have clearly gotten out of control in both parties.

The quickest way to a majority, the quickest way to 60 votes in the Senate, is to have Republicans who stand on principle,” he added. “Nothing right wing; what I’m talking about is where mainstream America is, and it’s just common sense.”

He conceded that the chances of winning a majority in the Senate in 2010 “may not be that great,” but he deflected the criticism that his support for primary challengers against GOP incumbents was hurting the party’s chances in November.

The only reason we have a chance at a majority now is a large part for the candidates I’ve been supporting. ... If the Republican Party in the Senate was now symbolized by Arlen Specter and Charlie Crist, we would not have the energy behind our candidates anywhere in the country.

Yes, please include Linsey Graham in that list - OUT!

No one in the whole wide world agrees with you more than me. But it can't happen until 2014. Which is a bitch!

It's the reality of politics, unfortunately.

Oh, I agree. But how do can you trust a man who will change with "the reality of polics' and doesn't stand on principles?

I don't trust him, he'll say what he "has" to say.

Oh I agree on the principles. But we wouldn’t have any conservatives left if we kicked those to the curb who endorsed a RINO at one time or another.

“Nothing right wing; what I’m talking about is where mainstream America is, and it’s just common sense.”

This is a great line. The secret of course is that commonsense is "right wing."

Yes, that is a problem but he can be put on notice and will either respond or be thrown out on 2012. His time is short and I think he know it! Actually, even if he tried to change his ways, I would not believe him - throw him out!

And therein lies the problem.

These "Representatives" of ours take what ever position is popular at the time. DeMint is being an opportunist, sorry but I've had enough of that.

I want someone who is true to their convictions...is it too much to ask for? Maybe, but I'll strive for it.

The Presidency is the least of our worries at this point. He can NOT control spending if Republicans control both houses. Even if he tries to bypass funding, Congress can withhold funding

That's what Newt said after the republican landslide of '94. "The president is irrelevant" he crowed. It didn't turn out to be quite so simple. But it beats hell out of any alternative outcomes.

He does really have limited options if both houses pass nothing... I understand you complaint but only if he tries to go even more unconstitutional can he continue his destructive ways. Not sure what that would gain him, but with this creep, who knows.

The president's veto power would still be a powerful weapon. Recall Clinton vetoing appropriations bills that didn't have what he wanted in them, "shutting down" the gubbermint, and blaming it on the republicans.

Obama will not sit still and let his dream of obliterating America just slip away. His hardcore leftists and gangster cronies will not go down without a fight. They didn't come this far just to let an election stand in the way.

Very true...but it would stop any of his actions. I have no problem with the Congress and Senate being inactive - hell, I would like all of Federal Government shut down for months at a time.

From the Boyz... Telling like it is...

“Let’s get this straight. Christine O’Donnell actually won her primary. But Karl Rove began actively campaigning for the Democrat in Delaware the day after O’Donnell won, when there was no other GOP candidate to back, when the voters had already decided, and blaming her for supposedly squandering a GOP Senate majority.”

“Nothing right wing; what I’m talking about is where mainstream America is, and it’s just common sense.”

Pound sand, Senator.

I'll think about starting to trust you when you quit saying things like that and thereby insulting conservatives, and when you publicly apologize for supporting Mitt Romney, instead of continuing to praise him.
