I am reminded of the following quote about the rule of law, and the terrible consquences of destroying it. Robert Bork quotes it in “The Tempting of America”

Bolt, in a familiar passage, has More say when assailed by his son-in-law with the charge that he would give the devil the benefit of law:

More: Yes. What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the devil?
Roper: I’d cut down every law in England to do that!
More: Oh? . . . And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned round on you — where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? . . . This country’s planted thick with laws from coast to coast — man’s laws, not God’s — and if you cut them down . . . d’you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? . . . Yes, I’d give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety’s sake.

The sad thing is that the Democrats don’t see the consequences of destroying the rule of law.

All my life I have argued against people who said that we should stop paying taxes. I fear that we will soon be at the point where it is impossible to stop those people. If the president, governors, and mayors refuse to support the immigration laws, then it will become impossible to convince people to pay taxes (or follow other laws).
