The night Christine O'Donnell won the GOP nomination for Senate in Delaware, party stalwart Karl Rove flipped out, and warned that she was a liar, of ill-character, and generally not the kind of person that the party should get behind.
It only took an instant for other party leaders like Rush Limbaugh and Michelle Malkin to flip out right back at him. But why did Rove take this tack? It's not because he's not into right-wingers

Rove is a good guy and he is very much wanting a Republican majority. Everyone is entitled to be wrong at times without meaning they have gone over to the dark side.
I know someone who is working his heart out to help Republicans in this election and he thinks the Republicans have no chance to pic up this seat.
I do not share that pessimism but I know the heart of my friend and I do not for one moment suspect his true loyalties.
Again, define exactly who is “the establishment”.
IMHO..Rove was actually trying to build his credentials as the one who could broker Tea Party deals. He doesnt understand the Tea Party has no leaders authorized to do such deals. Hes pissed because hes out of the power broker loop as We the People are starting to take responsibility for vetting candidates directly. Wait til all of DC figures out that with modern communications and alternative media...theres no need for power brokers or lobbyists.
Why is Rove out slanderously attacking the party nominated candidate for Senate in Delaware. Why, if the Delaware race is so vital to the party, is Rove doing everything he can to insure we lose the race?
Rather then defending Rove out of a misplaced loyalty to the GOP think about it.
The 9-12 Project published the fact Mr Rove contacted them for the Castle campaign asking them to switch their support to Castle.
Rove was an active agent, even if unpaid, of the Castle camp.
Rove has never acknowledge that connection. He has repeatedly billed himself in his slanderous attacks on O'Donnell as "just a political analyst" giving his "objective opinion".
That is lying by omission.
That Rove has not made full disclose of his connections to the Castle campaign indicates a clear conflict of interest and a deliberate attempt to mislead Fox News and it's viewers. In the private sector such a failure to disclose would result in termination of employment if not an arrest for fraud.
Why does Rove get a free pass from living up to the same standards he is on TV every day demanding O'Donnell live up to?
When you know of his connection to the Castle camp, his comments are a whole lot less credible.
I don’t like that either. But we part where you “end” and I “don’t like”.
All we have is the GOP and we don’t, at this time, right now with that loon in the WH,have 15 years to build a new party. It cannot be done in the next two years no matter what grandiose statements seen here on FR.
I believe with all my heart that the next election could determine the success or failure of this country. We are teetering on the brink, we may be over the edge. But this is not the time to fracture over these issues.
I think O Donnell may be a looney tune but I would vote for her over any democrat. I don’t expect nor deserve to be vilified because I think she is a looney tune. But it happens here.
I also think Palin is unelectable and I am vilified for that.
We need to quit vilifying, fracturing, banishing, insulting other people and elect republicans. Rove needs to do the same thing and I think he will.
Maybe you will tell me exactly who is “the establishment”?
Nice post, and I agree with it.
Why is Rove out slanderously attacking the party nominated candidate for Senate in Delaware. Why, if the Delaware race is so vital to the party, is Rove doing everything he can to insure we lose the race?
I have to admit that when I read the Palin threads and see the emotional hysteria of the Palin worshipers here on FR, it makes me less inclined to support her as her supporters seem childish.
I can't let that influence me as she cannot be responsible for who are her supporters.
Look, this is not heaven and we do not have access to any perfect people. We must do the best we can.
While I do not agree with Rove on this point, he is still a very good Republican.
Why is Rove still out there trashing our own candidate each and every day if this race is so very vital to the GOP?
I don’t know why Rove went off on this. Perhaps seeing a lost senate seat which might have been wrong and being convinced it would be lost made him go off.
It was odd, usually he is measured. How could anyone know? I know that people on the same side can disagree pretty strongly on things and stay on the same side and not totally wipe out one another.
I know little about Odonnell, you won’t get truth posted here, only opinions. But she does not strike me as a serious person or a reliable person. THat said, she isn’t a democrat so I would vote for her but wouldn’t declare she is a great candidate.
Wow! A call for unity. Thank you. A house divided will not stand. It takes all of us, and all our warts to drive out the Democrats.
Yes and this has been to the detriment of this nation. Conservatives have held their nose to put people in office just because they had an (R) after their name.
Times are a changing. I am so glad that these people like Rove are being exposed for who they truly are. They truly are the “establishment” and we need to get rid of all of them.
Our nation is on the line.
“misplaced loyalty to the GOP leadership”
What else do you suggest at this point in history? And why is loyalty misplaced? You were loyal for all those years, why is it now you are thinking it was misplaced?
The leadership is not perfect, is stupid at times. Carl ROve is a human being capable of being imperfect. THat said, he is not out to destroy this country. Some are. But not him. And not the GOP leadership. ANd not George Bush and not you or me.
The enemies of our country should be remembered, and they are not us!
Stop wasting energy on hating Rove, or any other ally for that matter. Rove is still a good guy--he made a mistake and he truly believes this will cost us a seat.
I agree. We have to keep an eye on the “enemy” and it is not us.
Who is your “establishment”?
I have worked all my life as has husband. We are well to do, we are
educated, successful, pay huge taxes, educated our kids, own our homes, cars, have nice portfolios.
Are we your vilified “establishment”?
If so you are way way off base in demanding the establishment be destroyed.
No. He is attempting to sabotage her and by extension the people who voted for her. Rove is losing power (and his temper) as it becomes clear WE THE PEOPLE mean business.
It wasn’t a matter of his being gracious; he sounded like a sore (Gore) loser.
Let me clarify. I define the “establishment” as people like Karl Rove, Charles Krauthammer, RNC, John McCain, Olympia Snowe, Mit Romney, Mike Castle, Arlen Specter. The usual suspects who talk like conservatives when they have to but change nothing. The people who have no real core conservative beliefs.
I agree. Well, it was at least stupid (and I disagree with what he said). I think sometimes people give these pundits almost supernatural powers, and forget, they are human beings and sometimes they too do dumb things. I think this will go down as a dumb thing.
