The adjective “unilateral” does not apply to when there is a kewl half million ransom involved. The Iranians are only disappointed in the size of the purse, and have regrets that they, perhaps, could have held out for more. Like F-14 repair parts.

I'd like to see these idiot hikers prosecuted in the US for their actions, starting with Ms. Shourd. What business did these people have in a Iraq to begin with? Who in their right mind goes hiking in a war zone and then decides to mess around with a country like Iran?
Every time some of our people decide to play chicken with regimes like those of Iran and North Korea it ALWAYS costs the USA far more than we'll ever know to get them back. I'll bet $500k goes quite far in Iran, and considering every time an American gets arrested in North Korea it always involves a state visit by a former president to free them... I am sure someone's palm is getting greased there too.
What is this costing us, besides the obvious public spectacle? I have no doubt these rogue regimes are coming out on the winning end in these situations. I feel that prosecuting Americans who willfully choose to get in trouble like this is the only way people can be taught to not engage in such stupid activities.
