Canadian authorities had monitored the process that followed when a US soldier was returned stateside. In one case the Army authorities were so (apparently) disgusted with one returnee, he was given an immediate dishonourable discharge. I believe that another was given ten months hard time.
There is no reason to believe that any "cruel and unusual punishment" exists on return of US soldiers. The army is well rid of them.

FWIW, even under Trudeau, Canada made a distinction w\between draft dodgers and deserters.
Those currently seeking refugee status in Canada are deserters.
There is an old expression oft said to those who found themseves deployed to a theatre in which they did not want to be:
"If you can't take a joke, you shouldn't have enlisted."
