First Lady Michelle Obama told the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Legislative Conference on Wednesday that her Lets Move! campaign to end childhood obesity requires grassroots efforts in communities across the nation, such as planting community gardens and making fresh produce more readily available, including in liquor stores.
Obama cited a group in Detroit as a wonderful example of how local communities can make the campaign succeed.

They drive a truck through the city, selling fresh, affordable produce, Obama said. And theyve set up a small market. Theyve planted a community garden. Theyve even convinced some of the local liquor stores to stock more fruits and vegetables.

Obama likened the fight against childhood obesity to the civil rights movement and the role black Americans have played in bettering their lives.

My guess is they’re selling other stuff off the truck also, and the lettuce is sort of a cover crop.

A group of folks in Detroit offers a wonderful example of the difference that can be made in communities, Obama said. Detroit is "busting at the seams" with people pouring in to take advantage of the better life, that's for sure.

And soon that guy driving a truck through the community selling fresh produce will be taxed out of business and also have to fill out millions of tax forms to buy the produce....
But after all, we don’t want this guy selling produce and maybe getting stinkin’ rich!

Back in the 60s when I lived up there, Strohs was the main brewski in town. But like a lot of other Motown industries, it crumbled.
