Move aside, Michael Bloomberg. California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman has just surpassed your record in personal spending on an election.
After giving her campaign another $15 million Tuesday, the Republican former eBay Inc. chief executive has now spent $119 million in the Golden State race. (You can view her campaign-finance records here.) Bloomberg spent $110 million of his own money to win a third term as New York Citys mayor last year.
Whitmans Democratic opponent, former California governor and current state attorney general Jerry Brown, has attacked the Republicans lavishness. Brown spokesman Sterling Clifford said Whitman is running a campaign that believes money can make up for truth or fresh ideas.

California Secretary of State Campaign Finance: Edmund G. Brown (Jerry)
Why is it that when I look at Brown I don’t think “fresh.” Brown must be in trouble, only the losers complain about the money this early.
I remember Chief Justice Rose Bird, that the voters had to turn out, appointed by Jerry Brown. Why so? Because she was stopping capital punishment.
Not to mention Brown has never had a real job in his life.
So if a megamillionaire can beat him by using her own money, go for it.
If she is imperfect, she is nonetheless far better for California.
Sounds good to me—A politician who does not owe anyone any favors!!!
What’s wrong with spending your own money? Isn’t it better than making promises to “God-knows-who” in exchange for contributions.
Nothing that I can think of - in fact, it's down right admirable.
Nothing wrong with spending your own money. Anyone who tells you different is an ass. The unions (who run the state) will spend nearly as much to see Brown elected.
It is so engrained in a liberal’s mind to spend other’s money (or expect other’s money to be spent on them) that it is just shocking (and almost criminal) when someone decides to spend their own—that’s our wonderful media hard at work!
Bloomberg spent his money to win one city vs her spending to blanket an entire state. I would call Bloomberg the spending champ by a mile.
Start a company, employ a few thousand (or tens of thousands in Whitman's case) people? You might as well be a child-rapist.
Somehow, I think that if Meg decided to take $100 million and donate it to Planned Parenthood, she would be their hero for life! In that case, that would be an acceptable reason to spend it!
So, they either want you to: A) spend it on liberal causes or B) give it to the government so they can spend it on liberal causes!!!
I agree.
Let her spend her money. At least it’s not ours.
In fairness to Whitman, the moderate-to-conservative voters in CA are spread out all over the state, in the suburbs and rural areas, forcing her to spend money just EVERYwhere, not just in big cities, etc.
In contrast, NYC is a pretty compact place.
From the following stats found on RealClear Politics, it looks like that is indeed the case:

Interesting points. I just hope that Whitman is a real Conservative.
According to the United States Census, the population of the State of California is four times greater than the population of New York City.
New York City Population: 8,214,426
United States Census Population: New York City
State of California Population: 36,961,664
United States Census Population: California
Yup, that too!
I’m not a big Whitman fan, though. Just voting “Jerry Brown prevention.”
Buying an election. Sad! McCain did too.
