The speculation about Daniel Snyder-controlled Red Zebra Broadcasting dropping talk on WTNT (570) was on the money, with the company confirming a flip to an ESPN-powered all-sports format on Monday, September 20. That would bookend Red Zebras existing all-sports station, WTEM (980). WTEM already carries the ESPN flag and there may be adjustments there. 570 appears to be carrying more of the ESPN Radio lineup, including Colin Cowherd, Scott Van Pelt, Doug Gottlieb and Brian Kenny. Though the morning show will be locally-familiar Steve Czaban, distributed by Sporting News Radio.
Current website. Not sure where these shows will land.
>>As DCRTV Predicted: Snyder To Flip 570 To Sports - 9/14 - DCRTV gets confirmation on our exclusive report of last week that Redskins owner Dan Snyder's Red Zebra will flip righty talker WTNT (570 AM) to sports talk. The change will take place on Monday, September 20th. As we first reported, Steve Czaban's new Sporting News Radio show will air in mornings, with personalities from ESPN's national radio network airing the rest of the time. Including Kevin Cowherd, Scott Van Pelt, Doug Gottleib, and Brian Kenny. Plus a new website at sportstalk570.com. No word on the local radio fates of WTNT's current line-up of syndicated righty political talkers, including Laura Ingraham and Michael Savage, or the "America's Morning News" morning show, formerly produced by the Washington Times. The line-up of Snyder's existing sports talker, ESPN 980, WTEM, will remain unchanged.....
from a 9/9 post on DC Radio & TV:
>>There is some talk that some of WTNT’s talkers, particularly the DC-based Ingraham and the intense Savage, would move to other area righty talkers, including Citadel’s WMAL (630 AM), Salem’s WWRC (1260 AM), or CBS’s WHFS-AM, The Big Talker 1580. Also, if Snyder does flip WTNT, he’d be removing “America’s Morning News” from its flagship station. The show, launched in mid-2009, had been produced by the Washington Times, but recently syndicator Talk Radio Network has taken control of the program and moved it away from studios in the Times building. WTNT, which was included in the deal when Snyder’s Red Zebra bought WTEM from Clear Channel more than two years ago, has never generated significant ratings. And those numbers have dropped even further, we’re told, with a recent ratings rise by WMAL, which airs righty talk titans Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.....
they should get Clinton Portis on. I loved what he had to say about the disgrace of having women reporters in NFL locker rooms.
Is Laura Ingraham still on 570? If so where will her show be going?
Our FM sports station includes political talk shows, AM and PM. It’s the only reason I listen to it. The Jim Rome program has got to be one of the most boring talk shows I’ve ever heard, and I’ve listened to all sorts of formats, including one that featured cigar smoking.
Apparently she’ll be off after this week; as mentioned above she may wind up on a diff station (see post) but not sure yet
I couldn't WAIT to get back into the Pittsburgh area for the best jazz in the nation ... WDUQ, news, jazz and (unfortunately) NPR.
Still .. the best jazz anywhere.
Although I’ll miss Lars and Jerry, I wonder if WTNT will replace the worst board operators in radio. In addition to long, unexpained silences, they never had a cue they didn’t botch. Last week, I actually heard THREE commercials running simultaneously.
She’ll get picked up somewhere, I hope, as she is local. Chris Plante is on her time slot on 630 but I really hope he stays. They’re both good, though.
Chris Plante is outstanding. He really should be in Rush’s rotation for subs.
DC’s sports radio is horrendous. No WFAN’s here, except whenever you can pick up 660 AM.
>>WMAL Loves Plante, Sorry Laura - 9/15 - There's been speculation that Citadel news talker WMAL might be interested in carrying DC-based Laura Ingraham, now that her local station, Red Zebra's WTNT, will be flipping from talk to sports on Monday. However, DCRTV hears that WMAL is very happy with its current local 9 AM-to-noon man, Chris Plante, who, we're told, triples Ingraham's late morning numbers in the local radio ratings. "Chris is an outstanding talk show host with a large and growing following and is a mainstay of WMAL," a top WMAL exec tells DCRTV.....
She’s also on WFMD, AM 930 which is easy to hear on the west side of town.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
You can only get New York stations reliably from night until morning. I listed to 880 for the Yankees games when I am able.
I would definitely prefer Plante over all of Rush’s existing subs except Walter Williams and Mark Steyn (my personal favorite). The other ones are pretty bland.
What I don’t get is the fact that a second sports radio station was tried a few years ago and it didn’t last long. It was better than 980, which is horrible, but it still apparently didn’t have enough of a market. In fact if I remember correctly 980 became Fox Sports Radio and the local ESPN radio (what is now 980) was on another station. I could be confused, though.
I think 106.7 does sports, but its amateur nonsense.
I have good luck with WFAN in the car during the cooler months, and I also frequently listen on-line. Their baseball coverage is superb, and even their overnight talent puts the entire DC sports radio roster to shame with the possible exception of Phil Wood.
I’m not a New Yorker, but Francesa, Benigno, Somers, Paige, Melusiss and the departed Mad Dog are top drawer.
106.7 in DC or Balt area is owned by CBS, I think, which also does sports in some other cities like Boston (WBZ-FM 98.5/
Patriots, Bruins etc)
Today they should have flipped the switch to make WTNT 570
sports. I haven’t checked their site but it’s probably redirecting to the new sports website. Meanwhile up in Albany NY I guess WGY 810 (owned by Clear Channel, I think they
do Rush, Hannity, etc.) is also being simulcast on FM at 103.1 (at a station they own which had been modern rock). In some cities you are seeing AM stations being simulcast on
FM (Providence RI, Worcester MA, etc.)
