In a surprise and significant move, Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid today announced plans for a vote on the Defense Department Re-authorization bill early next week that will include the DREAM Act, according to the National Immigration Forum.
The DREAM Act, legislation that has been lingering in Congress for years, would provide a path to legalization for some young people who were brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents or others. It offers legalization to young people who attend college or join the military.
Pro-immigrant groups have in recent months pressed aggressively -- in light of the impasse on comprehensive immigration reform -- for passage of the more narrowly targeted DREAM Act.
The following is a statement from Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration Forum:
Senator Reid continues to be one of the Senate's greatest champions for immigrant youth in America and he has shown great courage with his decision to bring the DREAM Act to the floor of the United States Senate. The DREAM Act is bipartisan legislation that enables high-achieving young people - immigrants who have been raised in the United States, have worked hard in school, and then pursue higher education or serve the United States Armed Forces - to achieve the American Dream. It is time to pass this important stepping stone to comprehensive immigration reform and we commend Senator Reid for bringing this forward for a vote.
There's a lot to digest here. First, the DREAM Act once did draw bipartisan support, but in today's tough-on-illegal-immigration climate, it faces a harder sell.
Critics of Reid will likely say he's simply pandering to the sizable Hispanic vote in Nevada on the eve of his challenging re-election bid to the U.S. senate.

new analysis by the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute found that more than 2.1 million illegal immigrants could be eligible to apply for legal status under the DREAM Act.
He is either pandering, or he knows he is done for and this is the START of the Lame Duck Session.
The scum in the democrat party are grasping at straws. May they drown in their own waste.
And that would be exactly what the little turd is doing.
Nonpartisan my A**.
The basic concept of the DREAM act I actually have little issue with - provided:
1. They fully and totally renounce all citizenship to their native country
2. They pay fines (reasonable ones)
3. They truly came here when too young to have a part in the decision
4. Plug the hole - mandate that schools can no longer enroll children who can’t prove legal residency
Flame away. This is the *single* part of “immigration reform” I am OK with. These kids grew up here. I don’t mean kids who’ve been here 4 years as anchor babies, I mean the ones who went all through school, etc, and are as American as anyone around them culturally.
Ping!
"little"????????????
I don’t care what the legislation is - attaching it to a completely unrelated bill that is viewed as “must pass” is immoral at best, and outright fraudulent in reality.
Yet this is the same concept as pork/earmark spending that also gets attached to random bills to get them in without much attention.
I think we need yet another constitutional amendment - one that prohibits combining unrelated bills. A defense bill should not be encumbered with social spending, immigration, or other civilian purposes.
Reid has tied it to a Defense bill because withouout doing that he has no hope of the Dream Act passing.
Let put them ALL in *a* military and start some chit with somebody.
We do NOT need “immigration reform”.
ILLEGALS that sign up for out military already get citizenship when they complete their time.
As for kids had by ILLEGAL parents, they must get in line also. We need to END birthright citizenship.
Reid apparently has decided he will not be re-elected. Probably a self-fulfilling prophecy :-)
Guess who would then get the scholarships?
The ILLEGAL kids.
They’ve beent trying to have that happen too.
Politics
Illegals cannot sign up for the military. Legals can gain citizenship through military service.
The rest I agree with.
He is either pandering, or he knows he is done for and this is the START of the Lame Duck Session.

Agreed, and most likely the answer is “B”.
If he was still trying to win, he would not be making such an unpopular move.
The DREAM Act is Amnesty....anything that does not take the Illegal Alien and deport them is Amnesty.
Not only this is Amnesty....this is a big spending program that will give Illegal Aliens residency at state universities in state tuition...something US citizens are denied.
The Dream Act is less objectionable than the blanket amnesty that Bush and McCain pushed for.
It can be part of a compromise that includes stepped up enforcement, deportation and employer verification requirements.
It should not be passed by itself without enforcement measures.
