I'm in NC, living 15 miles from where I was born.
I remember my mom sending me to the drug store with two dimes to get her a pack of cigarettes. The pack came out of the machine with two pennies scotch-taped to it; and I'm not making that up.

I remember the pennies being inside the cellophane wrapping on the package.

The pack came out of the machine with two pennies scotch-taped to it I know you are not making it up.
I once had the job of inserting three pennies, with the aid of a machine, under the cellophane of a pack of cigarettes. The reason this was necessary is the cost of a pack of cigarettes went from twenty cents to twenty-two cents and the cigarette vending machines could only accept quarters. This job didn't last long because the cost per pack quickly went to a quarter.
