Reid seeks to move 'don't ask, don't tell' repeal legislation

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) intends to bring the 2011 defense authorization bill to the floor next week.

The defense bill contains critical military policy as well as a provision that would repeal the ban on openly gay people serving in the military. Reid was scheduled to meet with Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) on Monday afternoon to discuss his plans.

Gay rights groups view September as a critical month in the Senate for the fate of the defense authorization bill and the provision to repeal “Don't ask, don't tell.” Any action delayed until after the Nov. 2 elections could diminish the chances of repeal for the Clinton-era law.

They applauded Reid's decision to move to the bill.

“We applaud the Senate Majority Leader's courage and his statement tonight to bring the defense bill to the floor. Now, we must deliver,” said Aubrey Sarvis, Army veteran and executive director for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, an organization dedicated to repealing the ban. “Repeal proponents may well need 60 votes in the Senate to get to this important debate in September. We are now in the final stretch and we must prevail."

It’s unclear if Republicans will agree to consider the defense bill given the inclusion of the don't ask, don't tell repeal and other controversial provisions. Reid will need 60 votes, including at least one Republican, to move the legislation to the floor.

What drives Reid to continue to move against the will of the public when his election is just weeks away?

In other words, shove it through while you have a dying majority willing to go down in flames before they get tossed out.

What ‘legislation’ was involved in DADT???

Was’t it more of a statement of already existing policy?

IF they ‘repeal’ it, that means it goes back to what it was- no gays in the military.

How do you enforce that? well if some one tells their orientation in some way you give them the boot.

I know when I was in boot camp a homo would NOT have been welcome. You take showers with 50 guys. You sleep in a room with them.

If you are homo and can deal with that WITHOUT making your sexualitiy an issue, then welcome to the military.... but dont talk about it. in other words DADT!

If it’s repealed, will the military then be able to ask?

Let's hope that even the New England RINOs reject this as a purely political move on Reid's part.

Sharon Angle needs to be asking voters in NV why open Homosexuality in the military and illegal amnesty are Reid's priorities with 15% unemployment in NV(the homo stuff might be popular in Las Vegas City, who knows?)

When I was in basic infantry trainining Camp Hood WWII there was a guy who liked to strut down the barracks, top floor, to go to the shower with his towel-—over his shoulder. Our platoon sgt., a vet of Guadicanal, told us young ones to stay away from him. He was very ‘girlie’ in field training and one day nearly got a bunch of us hurt when a Lt. giving a lecture on phosphorous grenades handed him a cocked one and he was so darned nervous he dropped it. Talk about soldiers retreating. Everyone in the platoon including Marvin got as far away as possible from the grenade. I don’t recall any serious injuries. I could never understand how this guy could be the flag man for our platoon but he was a great BSer and could really step out. Never saw him after basic. I ended up in a relacement depot an Leyte and glad Marvin wasn’t there as far as I know.

The homo-perverts are always crowing that the general public is overwhelmingly in favor of repeal. But I have yet to see a credible poll showing this.

Well, let's see...

You CHOOSE a lifestyle and assume the risks....if it includes getting the s*#t kicked out of you regularly by others who don't appreciate your choice, so be it. What you wanna do in your "fun" time is up to you, but don't expect others to appreciate it or want to hear about it, necessarily.

If you wanna hump sheep, it's your choice, but when you're called a "sheep humper" it's today's screwed up system that allows you to claim "harrassment" or "bigotry", or whatever else since you have become a "favored" Class.....

Let the limp-wrists be back in the closet or toilet stalls where they belong, and if they get the crap kicked out of 'em regularly, maybe they'll think about "consequences", instead of promoting their problems.....

” Sharon Angle needs to be asking voters in NV why open Homosexuality in the military and illegal amnesty are Reid’s priorities with 15% unemployment in NV...”

If she would harp on these tho things for a while, she would win this. She should be 5- 10 points ahead at this juncture.

I think he is just scrounging for votes at the bottom of the barrel.

We have an all-volunteer military.

This will decimate it, IMO.

Arrogance

Hubris

Dirty Harry is above the rest of us unwashed masses.

Listen carefully to the inflections in his voice whenever he talks.

Watch his body language.

He really thinks he cannot & should not be challenged on any of his positions -personal or public.

I live in Nevada, I am praying that Dirty Harry goes back to Searchlight & continues to flim flam land owners there with his ‘land swaps’.

"What drives Reid to continue to move against the will of the public when his election is just weeks away?"

People. These are the political games that the democrats love to play. Lumping people into groups then giving them a foil against the evil republicans. Reid knows this will not pass and frankly, he doesn't want it to. It's all about framing the rightwing as backward trogledytes and themselves as caring, tolerant people.

Seriously, Obama could issue an executive order and in minutes, DADT would be official policy. The Dems don't really want that though as it would take away one of their many wedge issues.

What the American people really need to be mindful of is while the economy is circling the drain, the democrats in power are focused on gay rights.
