Democrats seeking to regain footing among middle-class voters are putting trade anxiety at the forefront of new campaign messages, challenging free-trade deals backed by the White House and linking Republicans to corporate outsourcing.
The new strategy comes as President Barack Obama is walking a fine line on the trade issue. Mr. Obama is pushing to sign a revised trade deal with South Korea by mid-Novembera week after Election Day. At the same time, the White House is rallying unions and other core Democrats with calls to curb companies' abilities to shift jobs overseas.
In southern Virginia, embattled Democratic Rep. Tom Perriello has put his opposition to the Korea deal and outsourcing at the center of his re-election pitch. In his manufacturing-heavy district in Illinois, Democratic Rep. Phil Hare attacks Washington for easing trade ties with China.
Both men, like several colleagues across the country, have begun airing television ads attacking their GOP challengers for supporting outsourcing.
Mr. Perriello's new ad depicts a dark-suited U.S. businessman standing in front of an Asian factory, thanking the Republican challenger, state Sen. Robert Hurt, for "protecting the tax loophole that gives a company like ours a kickback for sending jobs overseas."
Mr. Hare's spot shows a picture of his GOP challenger, Bobby Schilling, alongside the image of an Asian woman wearing a head setan apparent reference to an Asian call center.
A spokeswoman for Mr. Hurt, Amanda Henneberg, called the Perriello ad "entirely false."
A spokesman for Mr. Schilling, Terry Schilling, pointed out that many people in the southern Illinois district work at Caterpillar or John Deerecompanies that profit from international trade. "These trade deals have been keeping people working in the United States," said Mr. Schilling.

Opposing free-trade deals is a common election-year tactic for Democrats, who rely on labor unions for financial support and grassroots activism.
Gotta’ love that one Dem in Caterpillar’s district. LOL
“Democrats Use Trade Anxiety as Campaign Tool”
Translation: “Democrats Resort to Fear Tactics While Accusing Everyone Else of Using Fear TActics”
IMHO
"Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice, shame on us." is the bottom line for Americans who were influenced by the hype and lies.
Nothing will work for the Democrats....Radicals cannot manage a country...It’s simple.
Another round of “tell the crowd in Sandusky, Ohio that you are canceling NAFTA and tell the Canadians through back channels that it’s just crap to get you elected” from the Dems.
For how long will these Rust Belt fools continue to fall for it?
The Dems just happen to be particularly stupid about it . . . but again, it's in their nature to promise that the government can do everything, and to offer folks government goodies.
North American Free Trade Agreement - President Bill Clinton speech - Transcript
US Department of State Dispatch, Sept 13, 1993
Exerpt from Clinton speech. AAAh, What fond memories of the coming utopia.
“In a few moments, I will sign three agreements that will complete our negotiations with Mexico and Canada to create a North American Free Trade Agreement. In the coming months, I will submit this pact to Congress for approval. It will be a hard fight, and I expect to be there with all of you every step of the way. We will make our case as hard and as well as we can. And though the fight will be difficult, I deeply believe we will win. And I’d like to tell you why: first of all, because NAFTA means jobs American jobs, and good-paying American jobs. If I didn’t believe that, I wouldn’t support this agreement”.
That was the funniest story of the last Election, in my opinion. And I’m not surprised the Journolisters stomped that story into the ground as quickly as they could. (McCain didn’t take advantage, either).
Clinton would do his best Reagan imitation, when he had to . . . .
If Democrats were so against free trade why haven’t they backed out of any of our free trade relationships even the more abusive ones like our trade ties with Communist slave labor China.
True, and this leads me to wonder just how many of our protectionist brethren here are in fact, Dem trolls.
I’d wager that they are mostly third-party malcontents, but it’s a small difference.
To which the appropriate response add is "Cutting taxes on business means more jobs here in America." Hello? Why do the Dems think it is cheaper to open a call center halfway around the world then to open it in Peoria? Is the lack of tarrifs? Or is that minimum wage+obamacare+osha compliance+tax compliance+environmental compliance+government licensing+govenrment fees is too much? So would the Democrats really set the tarrif(tax loophole in dem speak) to offset all that? What would the end result of such a tarrif be? Instead of bringing jobs back here, companies would just leave the United States and run their businesses in countries that are more business friendly. That's right, instead of outsourcing jobs, Democrats want to outsource our employers. That should go over well. . .
That’s right; third party moron or dem troll, a distinction without a difference.
I caught that, also . . . if I am an employer, and I’ve contracted my call-center operations to some outfit in India, I’m not doing it to take advantage of a “tax loophole that gives a company like ours a kickback for sending jobs overseas,” I’m doing it to avoid paying taxes in the first place. It’s more of a tax shift, really (to the Indian operation).
“...and this leads me to wonder just how many of our
protectionist bretheren here are in fact Dem trolls...”
Question: Are trolls terribly ugly, do they smell and
do they leave a trail as they pass?
Just asking.
The need for someone to purchase our current debt trumps all economic rational. Future generations will be in the position of having to pay off great debt to our enemies, with out the means to do so.
I don't know which is more unbelievable...the fact that this dem is arguing for policies that will make Cat's products more expensive to export or the fools who buy it hook, line and sinker.
