Congress is back for a final four-week session before the midterm elections, and lawmakers are facing a politically divisive question: How many of the Bush-era tax cuts, which expire at the end of the year, should get extended?
Democrats have split over what to do, and the issue is now dividing Republicans as well.
Until a couple of days ago, it seemed congressional Republicans were on the same page about extending all the Bush-era tax cuts. But a crack in that united front appeared Sunday when House Minority leader John Boehner told CBS' Face the Nation he could see voting for what most Democrats want, which is to extend those cuts only for household income under $250,000.
"If the only option I have, is to vote for some of those tax reductions, I'll vote for 'em," Boehner said.
Monday, the No. 2 House Republican appeared to reject Boehner's willingness to vote for a measure allowing the tax cuts for high income to expire. In a statement, Minority Whip Eric Cantor declared "raising taxes in this environment is a non-starter for me."

Maybe he can be exposed if we have an Impeachment hearing.
Is there only ONE definitive tax bill on 2011 taxes allowed? Seems to me that the 2011 Congress could change the rates if it wished, even making cuts retroactive to the beginning of the year.
I quit trusting any Republican. Their deeds will speak for their worthiness.
Agree re: Cantor - he cannot be trusted.
Has Mike Pence commented yet?
Will Snowe follow her NORMAL path and cave in to the Rats?
I agree—Cantor seems to make the unfortunate decisions of a rank careerist.
Until Sunday, it appeared all repubs were on board for extending those tax cuts, which is vital to grow the economy, and the right thing to do! Now, there's this asinine talk of compromise. Which on it's face shows weakness to the country on how repubs stand. Lower Taxes are a bedrock agenda for ALL repubs.
See, what hurts the party and the country the most is when the repubs show there's any value at all to the dems agenda. Not only their voting record but their talk distresses the grassroots.
When this vote comes up any repub who votes for destroying America's economy by stopping tax reduction ought to be resoundingly thrown out of office! How else do you make sure you candidate does not compromise the agenda????
The Federal Tax receipts were the largest ever in 2007, under the current tax rates.
The deficits are created by SPENDING!
Do we really believe that rich people bury their money in the back yard?
They buy goods and services, hire more employees, or invest their hard earned money, making it available for other hard working people to borrow to buy goods and services, expand their business, and hire more employees!
