A mother neglected her three children and let her dogs starve to death because she was so obsessed with a computer game.

The 33-year-old woman played the Small World game almost non-stop on the internet for months while her children were reduced to eating cold baked beans straight from the tin with their fingers.

Her home became filthy, with rubbish strewn over the floor and the bodies of her two dogs, a German shepherd and a lurcher, left for two months in the dining room it was revealed.

SNIP

The woman's children, aged nine, ten and 13, were badly neglected for six months, said Deepak Kapur, prosecuting.

When officers arrived at the house in Swanley, Kent, in February the woman told them it was 'in a bit of a mess' They then saw rubbish all over the floors in all of the rooms.

The woman tried to block officers from entering the dining room and when asked why she replied: 'All right, my dogs are in there. They are dead. I killed them. 'I probably starved them, probably because I have been playing the computer game all the time.'

I have a hard time believing these dogs ‘starved to death in her dining room’. Especially with small humans running around. German Shepherd? The incessant barking?

She probably poisoned them.

I regret that the only requirement for parenthood is genitalia.

That's terrible... I knew how to warm up beans by the time I was 9.

Small World??

You have got to be kidding me.

I would think a 13-year old would have done a better job there. heh. Probably did do better than “mom”

I don’t understand why a 13 y.o. is reduced to eating baked beans with his/her fingers, or letting younger siblings go through that, or letting the dogs starve. I don’t even understand why a 9 or 10 y.o. would do that. Maybe the children are very backward, by nature or nurture.

"And feed dogs."

Now that you mention it, I did have to feed and walk the dogs at that age.

She suffered a sever psychological trauma. I suspect that her actions were not malicious or slothful in nature, but rather she was behaving in way which was beyond her control.

She needed intervention, as did the children, and fortunately they received it. All in all it was a ‘sort of’ happy ending. It could have been much worse. My condolences to her on the loss of her husband.

The bigger picture is how many teenagers have this same problem but with no dogs and no children and never get help at all. They start when they are thirteen, suddenly ‘wake up’ when they are eighteen and wonder where their childhood went. Happens all the time these days.

By the time I was 9, I had already had days when I was desperate for a can of beans or it's equivalent.

Her welfare payment wasn’t high enough. It’s not her fault. They need to tax the rich some more so that people like this can have servants to care for their kids while they play their games.

By 13 years old, I would have marched up to Mom, pulled the plug on the computer, then snipped off the end of the cord with a pair of wire cutters.

Incredible!

I expect if the mother neglected her children at 9,10, and 13 she neglected them at all earlier ages too. Unfortunately that makes for a pack of sadly ignorant children.

That’s what I was thinking, if a 9 and 13 yo can’t warm up beans and wash a few plates and silver ware they are in sad shape indeed. As for the dogs, it takes a long time to die of starvation, even for a dog, I bet she killed them by some other means. I mean the kids could feed the dogs if it comes to that.

I think you answered your own question. Look at the mom. Kids don’t have much to work with themselves.
