Kashmir erupted on Monday in the worst violence since separatist protests began sweeping through the disputed Himalayan region three months ago, with authorities partly blaming the inflamed tensions on televised reports of Koran desecration in the United States.
The bloodshed, which came as Indian leaders were searching for a way out of the Kashmir crisis, left at least 14 civilians and two security officers dead and at least 60 people injured in clashes across the region, authorities said. In one town, Tangmarg, authorities said officers opened fire after protesters had set a school and other government buildings ablaze.
Kashmir has seen almost daily Muslim demonstrations since June, with angry crowds defying strict government curfews to throw stones or voice their anger. Protesters range from separatists who want an independent Kashmir state to others demanding that India’s central government remove thousands of Indian paramilitary troops, release political prisoners and lift laws that grant special immunity to security officers. Prior to Monday, at least 73 people had been killed as officers had fired live ammunition against crowds of stone-throwing protesters.
On Monday, state authorities sought to differentiate the new spasm of violence as separate from the other daily protests, instead linking it to the reports of the desecrated Koran. For more than a week, Indian authorities had fretted over the planned Sept. 11 burning of a Koran by a Florida pastor, Terry Jones. Officials had asked Indian channels not to broadcast such an inflammatory act, and Mr. Jones ultimately canceled his plans in the face of global pressure.

The "protests" are not over the koran being threatened in Florida. The "violent clashes" are something else.

Agreed. This is spin by the Indian government and US media. The root problem is this is a majority Muslim state where most people don't want to be part of India. It all started during the partition when Kashmir was a princely state and the prince decided on India over Pakistan. There has never been an election to decide because the consensus is India would lose.
So Muslims are VIOLENT because of some guy in Florida with a 50 member church!! Gee...and here I thought their “religion” of murder and thuggery had something to do with it! Silly me!!!
Dear CT, in your prior post there are inaccuracies about the Kashmir situation.
India has held many elections in its part of Kashmir.
The Pakistanis attacked in 1948.
There have never been ANY elections in Pakistani Kashmir.
Kashmir consists now of Shias, Pro India, and the Sunnis, some anti India and Buddhists in Ladakh. The Hindus of India have been mercilessly chased out of the region along with the Sikhs. This current unrest is being fomented by Pakistan, who has decided that since the insurgency was beaten by India, the way to needle India is through an “intifada” like strategy.
The Maharajah of Kashmir chose India as part of the Partition process delineated by the British.
Not all Muslims in India chose Pakistan, in fact many decided to stay in India.

The only force with enough power in the region to do anything substantial to squelsh the Islamic tribes is India and they aren’t about to be drawn into a protracted war unless maybe they get their backs up over Kashmir. The tribes will fight anyone, anywhere, anytime, even each other if there is no one else around so a distraction in Kashmir won’t hurt us in Afganistan. Maybe some good will come of Terry Jones dumb idea.
Judeo-Christian environments create goodness, acts of kindness, charitable actions, forgiveness, tolerance, and allow for freedom of thoughtful discourse. Buddists, Hindus and Sikhs also practice many of the same teachings. They live in harmony with the rest of the world. There is only one religion that I know of that creates fear, destruction, oppression, and condones murder and cannot live peacfully with other groups. It is the direct opposite of Judeo-Christian teachings, the direct opposite of good is evil so I can only conclude one thing, islam = evil.
I agree with you except for one point. Marxism in it’s many guises (Marxism, Communism, National Socialism, Liberalism etc.) is another religion that cannot abide competition.
Those inclined to violence need no real excuse. If word got out that the Southern Baptists decided to hold its 2011 Convention in Dearborn. Michigan and go door-to-door witnessing, riots would break out in the streets of many cities throughout the world, maybe even Dearborn.
