NEW YORK (AP) -- "The Satanic Verses" author Salman Rushdie is not a great fan of organized worship but believes an Islamic center and mosque should be permitted two blocks from ground zero.
Rushdie's satirical novel led in the 1980s to worldwide riots by Muslims and calls for his death.

Somebody ought to tell Rushdie that it has never been about their “right” to build the mosque... it’s about INSENSITIVITY.
If this project is about getting people together and building bridges as Imam Rauf says, then IT HAS ALREADY FAILED.
But it’s a straw man. Who is arguing they don’t have the right, subject to local zoning laws of course?
Same headline could have read "Rushdie understands the "sensitivities" of building the site close to where thousands were killed during on Sept. 11, 2001."
Zero sum gain
Why is the difference between RIGHT and INSULTING so hard for libs to understand?
Burning Koran. Why didn’t Obama deal with THAT in the abstract — we have the First Amendment RIGHT to free expression? Inalienable, even, subject to safety limits.
But when it comes to the Mosque... hurt feelings don’t matter so much.
Who wants a damn Bridge to Hell?? Stick that POS Mosque in Arabia.
They have as much right to build it as that pastor in Florida had to burn the koran.
The FBI, POTUS, and Secretary of State all trampled one man’s rights while defending another’s.
And the “right” to offend does not mean that one SHOULD offend.
Is there still a bounty on ole Salman’s gourd? Just asking.
The “mosque righters” also blithely overlook all the innocent moooslems who will be hurt because most Americans see this as an unprovoked attack on our sensibilities by mooslems.
It should not be build there for their sake.
The Imam is a publicity seeking nut.
He is on tape saying that the 9-11 attacks were a watershed moment in the West getting Westerners to finally look at Islam.
Odd thing to say when the meme is that the 9-11 attacks had "NOTHING IN THE WORLD" to do with Islam.
I really don’t know anyone who questions their right to build there. It just isn’t the right thing to do, it is a victory mosque and if they truly were interested in improving relations with the Western world they would move it.
... and I defend the Muslims’ right to kill Rushdie.
So, does he want us to just shut up and bow?
So, does he want us to just shut up and bow?
Nobody is arguing otherwise. But there is a huge difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do.

"Hey look, a talking fish!"
The right to do whatever you want with your own property went bye-bye several generations ago.
People have no rights under Islam.
It doesn’t grant any.
Why didn’t Obama lecture Muslims about how a small group of radical Christians does not represent the lot of them, the same way he always lectures us about Islam?
