Congress is returning for a final pre-legislative session on Monday to confront the thorny issue of potentially raising taxes during an economic downturn, with neither party showing clear consensus on a solution.
The main order of business in the coming weeks will be debating the fate of income tax cuts approved under the Geroge W. Bush administration in 2001 and 2003 that are scheduled to expire at the end of this year. House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) surprised Democrats on Sunday when he said he might not oppose President Obama's plan to extend the cuts for all but the wealthiest households, although he reiterated his preference for keeping the lower rates in place for all income groups.
Boehner's comments, made on the CBS program "Face the Nation," altered the landscape of the tax debate by suggesting that Republicans might not obstruct Democratic efforts to raise taxes on the top earners - a move advocated by Obama and many other Democrats as necessary to lowering the record deficit.

Boehner may have surrised Democrats , but he dosn’t surprise me.
He aint much.
Boehner’s aware that after nine years of calling these “tax cuts for the rich”, there isn’t any way the Democrats can handle them that won’t discredit them, anger their base, or anger the voters. It’s your basic catbird’s seat moment.
I love how the White House and lib media is spewing the line “relief to middle class taxpayers.”
Relief?
They are not cutting taxes. Nothing changes. They are just not raising them.
Where are the GOP squishes to hammer this home?
A perfect Freudian slip on the part of the writer. Obama certainly advocates Republican obstruction of the tax cuts. That's why he set the trap. Boehner sprung the trap by going along. Now Obama is stuck.
I'll bet that there is no tax cut before the election, since Obama doesn't really want one. There is a chance, though, that there will be enough Democrats who go along with a complete extension of ALL the tax cuts that Obama will be forced to sign it.
Boehner might look at it, and realize the Democrats are in charge, and he might be able to only “get” so much out of them. I suppose he could introduce his own legislation which extends all the tax cuts and let the Dems vote no. Whatever Tax Cut the Dems will allow to be voted on will be the one the Republicans will vote for. Let the Dems vote against a tax cut and see how that goes in their districts.
we are screwed anyhows.
i doubt a man or women on this planet exists that can untangle this intended stringballed snarl. hitler was the last man that comes to mind that attempted such. it is not going to end well. these situations never do.
send your kids to prelaw with high hopes they can pass the bar exam, otherwise they will starve or be slaughtered with the rest.
just living the dream.
Please don’t compromise with the creatures from he**
Mr. Boehner.
Why punish success? Why the animosity-towards and demonizing-of "the rich?" Just who are "the rich" anyway, and why do the liberals try to instil such class hatred towards them?
Here's a hint people, the reason we have record deficits in this Country isn't because "the rich" are not paying their fair share. Far from it - "the rich" are paying far more than their fair share already. No, the reason we have obscene deficits in this Country is that big-government liberals, aka socialists, aka Democrats, keep spending too much, and making government too big. To borrow one of hussein's pet phrases: big government is unsustainable.
Republicans **might not** obstruct.
