Red-district Democrats are pressuring Speaker Nancy Pelosi to extend Bush-era income tax rates for all brackets, revealing a high-stakes rift between the party's vulnerable moderates and its safe liberals as the issue increasingly dominates the national debate.

POLITICO has obtained a draft of a letter from rank-and-file lawmakers to Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer urging them not to let tax rates rise for Americans at the highest income levels.

Why doesn’t this Congress just show us how much they want to be re elected, and take a 40% pay cut, and reduce 50% the salary of the President for poor performance. This is what you do in BUSINESS.

There are a HELL of a lot of DEMOCRAT families making over $250k with several children (yes, it does happen to Democrats once in a while), who are scared to death about the $50k tuition bills (for each child) right around the corner. Likewise, there are a lot of divorced Democrats (your more typical type) making $200k and paying child support, again scared to death about tuition payments coming up. These people are in very red areas (i.e., NY, Boston, DC, LA, San Fran, Seattle, etc.)

These people are RIPE for the Republicans to pick off, but the REPUBLICAN PARTY HAS TO FIGURE THAT OUT.

My suggestion to them - get some firm to call around the wealthy suburbs (like Newton, MA, for example) and ask a few questions. You might be very surprised you hear.

Well yeah. If you make more than $200K per, you are 'filthy rich'. After all, in five years you'll be a 'millionaire' and that's 'rich'.

Of course if you make $200k per, about 50% is taken out in combined taxes so that leaves you with only $100K a year. So now it'll take you Ten Years to clear a million.

Then again, there's the cost of living -- like in NYC, Chi, or SF. As you're not likely to live in the Ghetto for $500 a month so that $100K per 'clear' drops down to $70K. Gee, now it will take 14 Years Plus, to get that million in the bank.

And if you're a 'filthy breeder' and have (ugh) 'children'. Those animals will eat about $20K a year in 'stuff'. So now you're down to $50K clear per year and now it would take 20 Years to get that million in the bank.

Then.. hopefully you or anyone in your family doesn't get REALLY SICK, or those rotten (ugh) 'children' don't want to go to college as that's possibly another $10K out of pocket each year, which leaves you with $40K and it'll take 25 Years to get that cool million.

Uh.. wait a sec?
All of sudden $200,000 per year doesn't look like a lot of money?!?

I better get a new calculator? Like the ones that the Dems use to determine 'rich'.

If you make $199,999 a year and your boss offers you a raise of $1, turn it down as quick as you can.

True.

However, since I am my own boss, that'll never happen anyway :-)

Being self-employed is great. EXCEPT, if I calculated my 'pay' per the hour there's times an Illegal Guatemalan landscaper makes more than I do.

RE :”Reps. Jim Matheson (Utah), Glenn Nye (Virginia), Melissa Bean (Ill.) and Gary Peters (Mich.) drafted the letter and are working to gather support, mostly from the moderate Blue Dog and New Democrat coalitions, for at least a temporary extension of the rates for top income earners as well as those in the lower brackets. Pelosi, who rose to power as a leader of the Progressive Caucus, is her party's chief advocate for hiking tax rates for folks in the top two income brackets while freezing them for couples making $250,000 or less. The situation may well be lose-lose-lose for Democrats. If they raise taxes on higher income Americans, they risk alienating moderate voters and campaign contributors in closely contested races in Republican-leaning districts. If they freeze the rates for everyone, they risk depressing an already deflated liberal base in districts all across the country — including those represented by centrist Democrats. And, if they kick the can down the road with a one- or two-year extension for the highest earners, President Barack Obama will have to wrestle with the issue again heading into his 2012 re-election campaign.

Many 200K+ Obama supporters in liberal high income high tax coastal states would get hit too, NYC, Maryland, California. They deserve a tax increase. Still not sure how this will play out.

“Rich People” don’t bury their money in the back yard!

They, buy goods and services, hire more employees, or invest it, so it’s available for others to borrow.
All of this activity creates jobs much more efficiently than ANY government spending.

Why don’t Republicans throw this in the face of Dems?

They will probably just look at the registration books and tax those registered as Republican and Independents more and give those registered as democrats a tax break. And of course the unregistered would have to show support of acorn and other left wing organizations in order to get the tax break. And if the unregistered can’t show support of the dems and libs or are found to have supported right wing or conservative organizations, they would be taxed higher too.

You know the democrats and liberals would do this, if they could.

I’ve always thought if the politicians could, they would have everyone’s paycheck direct deposited to the treasury to feed their need for power and assuage their guilt for the success of the U.S. While at the end of the week everyone regardless of whether or not they worked and earned it, would receive a bowl of rice to share with the family. Meanwhile the dems and libs would dine on filet mignon, caviar and champagne. Of course today’s filet mignon is kobi beef.

Considering they’ve never had to actually live on 200K per year, they are worth much, much more, they’d never know that living on 200K per year nowadays is basically comfortable, definitely NOT rich, especially NOT filthy rich.
