Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, a partner in the project to build an Islamic center and mosque two blocks north of the former World Trade Center site, said today that debate surrounding the project has been “hijacked by radicals” on both sides.
Speaking with Christiane Amanpour on ABC’s “This Week,” Rauf said media attention has inflamed and distorted the debate, and that the debate is being watched carefully by the Muslim world.
“The discourse is being watched very closely, and if we make the wrong move it will only strengthen the radicals,” he said.
If the proposed center was moved, Rauf said, “The headline in the Muslim world will be 'Islam is under attack in America.'"
Rauf said the proposed Cordoba House community center was initially reported without controversy. “This was front page news and nobody objected,” he said, adding that “certain politicians” had decided the controversy “would be very useful for their political ambitions.”
Asked about a tweet posted by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin that said Ground Zero was "too raw" of a site for the center, Rauf said it was “disingenuous, to a certain extent.”
Florida pastor Terry Jones, who had announced a plan to burn Korans on Sept. 11, canceled his protest and traveled to New York on Friday night. He initially said he would cancel his Koran burning if planners moved Cordoba House to another site, and hoped to meet with Rauf to discuss the offer.
Later Friday, Jones said the burning would not go ahead, even after his two-hour deadline passed without any word from Rauf.
Asked by Amanpour about Jones’s offer, Rauf said, “How can you equate burning of any person’s scripture with an attempt to build interfaith dialogue?” He said if the Koran burning had gone on as planned, it “would have strengthened

This would allow folks who don't know what is in the Koran to find out. The MSM would not cover this demonstration but the Internet and FOX News would. Then we could have a debate with each side voicing their position.
In this sort of dialog, the truth will win out.
As for the warnings from the Imam, it sounds like a form of extortion to say that the Muslim world is watching. What he really fears is that ordinary Americans, with not one bit of prejudice, will learn the truth about the forces against us. The American people also need to learn of the living conditions of all non Muslims living in Muslim dominated countries.
I also feel that it is in our best interest to let them build the Mosque at Ground Zero. Then the City of New York( The Mayor and the Manhattan Borough President) and the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey will have to explain why St. Nicolas church, the Greek Orthodox Church which was destroyed along with the WTC on September 11, 2001, has not been rebuilt.
This Church has been a part of the landscape of lower Manhattan since 1916.
The very fact that muslims are not bound by the truth (ala taqiyyah) gives them quite an edge in dealing with the media and in negotiations.
They lie with great aplomb...that's one of the main reasons I think Obama is a muslim, he is a audacious and very effective liar.
I would think that lying with divine authority (which is exactly what taqiyyah is) gives a liar a completely different capacity for untruth. In the Judeo/Christian world, liars give themselves away with some telltale traces of guilt.
No so for muslims.
When muslims lie to infidels, there is a certain gleefulness about it. Their eyes actually seem to smile when they lie.
I don't understand why ABC's George Stephanopoulos, whose father is a member of the congregation of St. Nicolas Church, has not ever mention this story. Given the position he is in, one would think this story is of interest to the 'ABC Nightly News' audience(limited though it may be).
Everyone needs to bear in mind that, under Sharia law, this man can lie to us and it is not a sin.

No kidding. That’s almost like, I don’t know, building a victory mosque right near the site of the largest attack by Muslim terrorists on that nation. That’d be crazy!
What is stopping all of this ‘interfaith dialogue’ from going on? They’ve got 70 mosques in New York, not enough room for a few folding chairs, a coffee pot and a box of donuts?
