U.S. ex-cons get training for green-collar jobs
CTV (Canada) ^ | 9/12/10 | Melissa Hincha-Ownby

Green jobs training programs provide a great opportunity for the nation's underserved communities to gain valuable work training to help lift them up out of poverty. This includes individuals that have served prison sentences. A Recovery Act-funded green jobs training program in Chicago will help provide jobs for 650 ex-convicts. And the green jobs for cons trend isn't limited to the Midwest; inmates at San Quentin State Prison in California recently were treated to a green jobs fair.

If you don’t train them for work after they have served their time, they go back to crime.

The only alternative is to make prison a deterant. We can wish for that but realistically it will not happen.

Absent that approach, you have to deal with the situation the best you can. If you have another solution that will work, I am all ears.

From my point of view, this “green jobs” gutter garbage is a criminal enterprise from all angles. Why waste money training the bulk of these ex-cons when they are already over-qualified for this field in the first place?

I agree with you. Proper technical ‘training’ to enable them to qualify for jobs is a good thing.

The question here is,do you think that is really what will be done?

What is a ‘green-collar’ worker? That can be anything from a nuclear physicist to a guy who cleans porta-potties.

Considering everything else our ‘current’ administration is doing, do you trust them, or could this just be a way to give out some ‘free money’ in promise for votes?

Most of the ‘green-collar’ workers I have seen, are doing BS busy work.

I wish for the best, for this program, but I will not be surprised if it turns out just to be a way to funnel more of our tax money into wasteful and poorly managed programs.

I say we pay for training for convicts. Train them to be Nuclear Plant Inspectors, and send them to Iran.

They couldn’t do any worse than the people we already have.

No, I definately did not say that and you have it exactly right. Thought about elaborating on that point but decided to stick to the single point.

Most of these folks are only bright enough to handle unskilled labor anyway - if that.

Should they be taught how to dress respectably, show up at work on time, manage finances, and control their base impulses? Certainly.

Is there value in teaching them about “green technology”? Probably not so much. They aren’t going to be designing wind turbines or evaluating solar collection sites anytime soon.

Would be more prudent to just teach these guys how to operate microsoft office. Barry and his coterie of elitist eggheads think that the country go green by hiring an army of unskilled workers to magically replace the need for oil, nuclear power and coal. This vague idea of “green jobs” makes no sense.

So, murderers, gang bangers, rapists, robbers, thugs, pedophiles and assorted other shi*tbags who have multiple offenses to land them in prison get jobs in an imaginary industry dedicated to a false pretense at taxpayer expense?

The nuthouse has won, officially.

Sorry all, but the vast majority of “ex-convicts” never assimilate back into society. They just keep going back in until they come out to tired to bang anymore. Then get some crooked doctor to declare they have a disability, move in with a surviving relative and live out the rest of their days eating more of our taxes, while drowning themselves in booze or heroin.

You don’t learn civility in a place where everyone is a snarling rabid dog.

Better to let them die there, then ever let them out to victimize another person. If that’s not a deterrent, then nothing is.

Personally, I think nothing is when you are dealing with people who consider themselves dead at twelve.

And he is coming to YOUR house to apply caulk and install insulation. Be sure to welcome him with milk and cookies....just try not to be judgmental, now.

I cannot think of a better profession for a felon to go into. They will spend their days in people’s homes, looking at what they have and what their lifestyle pattern is, and then spend their evenings calling their ‘friends’ and letting them know the best time and method to hit those homes (and then taking their 20% cut of the loot).

Unreal.
