(Excerpts)

MIAMI – Forecasters say Hurricane Igor has rapidly strengthened to a Category 4 storm in the open Atlantic. It doesn't immediately threaten land, but is expected to get stronger as it moves west.

***********************

Igor had maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (220 kph) and was moving west at 14 mph (22 kph). Some additional strengthening is expected in the next two days.

The center of the storm was located about 1,065 miles (1,715 km) east of the Northern Leeward Islands.

KEYWORDS:
According to the National Hurricane Center, Igor is 1,065 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands. From the 5-day projected path, it looks like it will likely head towards Bermuda and then possibly the Mid-Atlantic coastline as it curves northward.

But it's so far out and already a Category Four. IMO, it'll definitely be a Five by the time it gets closer.

The standard models show this hurricane far moving away from and going out to sea. No threat to US mainland.

Right now it is moving along at about 300 miles per day. If it maintains its speed we should be dealing with it before the week is out. It seems as though this one is coming rather quickly.

Hmmmm.....it depends on the intensity.

I’ve lived in Southern California and currently live in New England.

If I had a choice of a 6.2 quake in California or a Category 4 or 5 hurricane hitting my area of the Northeast, I’d rather be in California dealing with the 6.2 earthquake.

If I had the choice of a 7.5 to 8.5 California quake to deal with or the choice of a Category 2 or 3 hurricane here in the Northeast, I’d rather deal with the hurricane.

On the other hand, the winters are much nicer in California....

The only land threatened is Bermuda.

Julia is right behind Igor, looks like it will also miss land.
There is a low pressure area going into the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. It will hit land, the question is: as what?
