I fail to see the connection between a day of service with A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE.

It must be the lack of community organizer in me.

Its not connected. If he really wanted to do something useful and connected to the 9/11 event positively, he could make it a day to spend with loved one (as a way to cherish anf honor the time we have together).
