There has to be more to this story. Maybe the kid already had a reputation at this school and the administrators acted accordingly.

It also seemed strange that he would want to go to school right after his dad was murdered. This is not passing my smell test.

It makes perfect sense for him to want to keep to his regular schedule. Staying busy is a time-honored way of dealing with grief. He was also avoiding all the funeral stuff at home.
