They are good eating - they're a West African delicacy - and some people also fancy them as pets, but if they ever got into the wild they'd be incredibly destructive.

I worked a tech gig with APHIS, the part of the Department of Agriculture that handles these checks. Often people bring in plants and animals because it reminds them of home. I think the snails were for eating. Other stuff gets in inadvertently through freight shipments. There’s a system to check what’s coming into the country and pick out the suspicious stuff, but it’s aimed at freight, the biggest bulk of imports.

I wish I would have saved it, but 9 years ago (right after the 9/11 attacks), there was a giant thread on FR with a BUNCH of pics of arab "art".

They depicted our land and population being devastated by bugs and pestilance (West Nile virus anyone?) In all of them, there was always a horse running through the background, that was supposed to represent the arab.
