Realizing carp are a much greater threat to our national security than illegal immigration, the Obama administration appointed a Carp Czar yesterday to oversee federal response teams preventing Asian Carp from entering the Great Lakes.
“When it comes to the Asian carp threat, we are not in denial. We are not in a go-slow mode. We are in a full attack, full-speed ahead mode,” says Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois. “We want to stop this carp from advancing.”
“The carp, which have steadily moved toward Chicago since the 1990s, are aggressive eaters and frequently beat out native fish for food, threatening those populations.” Unlike illegal aliens...

Given their rate of advance it’s almost certain these carp are already in the Great Lakes. Wasn’t the big Great Lakes threat a decade ago the Zebra mussles? Whatever happened with that.

What other entity, besides the fed, should have jurisdiction or oversite, on an issue that includes many different states, the great lakes, and inland waterways that cross state borders? Shouldn’t commitees have someone in charge?

I can only speak for western Lake Ontario regarding zebra mussels. They have become “americanized”, that is their shells have softened up some and they are now part of the food chain. It’s a mixed blessing though. It is nice to be able to see 20 feet or more down because the lake is so clear now.

How come I never hear about these great jobs until after they’ve been filled? I’m even qualified. My buddies back in highschool used to call me the “Carp King.” Not much of a difference between king a czar, I’d think.
