At the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Robert Gates told staff in a morning meeting he "strongly endorsed" the view of his military commanders that any Koran-burning plan could endanger U.S. lives, said a Pentagon spokesman, Colonel Dave Lapan.
General Ray Odierno, the former commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, said the event would only provoke Muslim extremists and increase threats to U.S. troops.
Two of the top commanders in Afghanistan have said the Florida church's plan risks undermining U.S. President Barack Obama's efforts to reach out to Muslims across the world.
Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay, whose country has nearly 3,000 troops in Afghanistan, said in a statement: "This initiative is insulting to Muslims and Canadians of all faiths who understand that freedom of thought and freedom of religion are fundamental to our way of living."
On Tuesday, several high-ranking Obama administration officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, spoke out against the planned event, and leading Christian and Jewish leaders also voiced outrage.
Actress Angelina Jolie, visiting Pakistan to highlight the plight of millions of people devastated by the country's worst floods, said on Wednesday she "hardly had the words" to express her opposition.
The United Nations called the event "abhorrent" and the Vatican also added to a growing chorus of global criticism.
In Iran, the planned Koran-burning drew protest from a leading cleric. "I along with 1.5 billion Muslims ... condemn this brutal and savage spirit ... I warn about its consequences," Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi-Golpaygani told Iran's Students News Agency ISNA.
"If it happens, Obama should be tried for it and this priest should be arrested immediately and his church must be shut down forever," he said.

We don’t do that here, do we?
2) When Moses came down from the mountain with the tablets of the Ten Commandments, he found his people had built idols and were worshipping false gods. He had those destroyed. He descimated the idols and rebuked the people for their sins against the true God. So...What is the difference between God telling us in His first Commandment - "..Thou shall have no God before Me." and Moses destroying the false idols, than the action of burning the Koran? Allah is a false god. The Koran demands Islamists worship him. Burning the Koran is destruction of the words of a false god.
I don't think the actions this Church will come to a good end because it is a firey time now and fanning the flames is not advisible now. But I understand and agree with the reasoning. It might have been better if they had just planned to quietly throw away the copies of the Koran. Making it public is only theatrical. But I don't condemn them for doing it.
And yet we have less outrage over Westboro than we do over this. If this guy wants to burn korans let him burn them. Just like those idiots are allowed to protest.
This is America. To shut him down would be just another example to muslims that we will kiss their backsides. That is my objection. The muslims kick up a stink and everyone falls over themselves to appease them.
He should offer not to burn if they remove ALL mosques.
Too bad our general and flag officers didn’t think to ask the lefties and draft dodgers to stop flying those Commie rag-flags during the Viet Nam war lest they encourage our enemies and those of our allies. I’m quite sure that they would have, patriotic-in-a different-way Americans that they were, responded with total acquiescence.

Good grief...I’d say it’s about time SOMEONE, ANYONE, actually has the cojones (mentally unbalanced or not) to stand up against the Koran and Islam. Go for it. Give us an excuse to wipe this terrorist “religion” out of existence. Of course, we would need a leader in the White House, which unfortunately we do not have at this time...just a girly-man muslim.
This was, I believe, the incident where Afghan-language bibles were sent from stateside to Afghanistan based troops. The allied commanders over there reasoned that these bibles were targeted at evangelizing in Afghanistan, and did not want to hurt their diplomatic efforts. I think it would have been a far more considerate move to ship them back to the US with an apologetic note, but they were burned as trash to save the money that would have been required to ship them.
That very well could be....but when I saw his support of Phelps....I doubted the guy’s credibility. Don’t get me wrong, tho. I think Islam is a death cult. Period. I’m getting as effing fed up as everyone else and am tired of walking on eggshells. There’s just ‘something’ about this that’s weird.
Where did all these trolls and plants in favor of this stunt come from? Democratic Underground?
He is forcing the hand of justice to do their job. God Speed
We need to ask Hilleray Clinton why she burned not only Bibles
but also the Church with all the congregants in side.76 people : Men women and children.
Don’t you see? Burning a Koran is a thousand times worse then stoning/beheading/etc. say, some innocent women convicted of rape, didn’t you know that? /sarc
Even better. Somebody has to stand up to these fanatics.
Maybe he’s looking to see how many Christians have a solid backbone when it comes to this putrid war against Islam.
Aren’t you tired of being cornholed by Muslims demanding this, that and whatever for their twisted religious beliefs. Like the kid who works at Disney demanding to wear her burka scarf out in public.
Oh, if you add up all the remarks about Westboro over the years, they dwarf the comments about the current affair. You can blot out the sight of the sun with a nickel held close to your eye, but that doesn’t mean the nickel is larger than the sun.
I agree with ya’. We can’t ‘pick and choose’ when it come to ‘The First’.

Yep. We tolerate fruitcakes here. Well, except for that incident with Janet Reno and Waco. But, that’s the liberals. We don’t need another Waco because some guy decides to burn korans. Not for the sake of making muslims in Saudi Arabia happy.
Yes and that’s something I support!
Sure is. And 9/11 is OK, and the murdering of unarmed Christians in Afghanistan is OK, and the denial of Christian worship in muslim countries is OK, anything the Muslims do is OK.
It feels so good to emasculate oneself.
