COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A lawyer for a runaway Christian convert from Ohio who was also an illegal immigrant says the 18-year-old woman has gained permanent residency in the United States.

Kort Gatterdam, a lawyer for Rifqa Bary, said Tuesday the news means Bary can now start applying for a driver's license, Medicaid coverage and college scholarships.

Gatterdam says Bary, a native of Sri Lanka, received her permanent residency card last week and can apply for citizenship in five years.

Bary also sought legal residency to achieve health coverage as she battles uterine cancer.

Sad state of affairs. This news item is really brief. The world "asylum" was never mentioned in the article (yet that is what the claim would be for someone seeking to come here to avoid persecution).

Hard to tell what tht case really is. Mentions getting a lot of handouts and being here illegally.

Send her down to the next pro-Ground Zero mosque protest and have her ask whether the mob thinks she should be killed for converting. These savages need to be smoked out.

Baruch Hashem. May she find a nice Christian man to marry.

And let us not forget the efforts of Jewish woman, Pam Geller, in keeping the story and her horrible treatment from being pushed under the rug.

The law allows for the granting of humanitarian visas when the applicant has a well grounded fear of persecution if returned to the home country. Said law would certainly apply in the case of a person who converts from Islam— the Hotel California of religions: you can check in anytime you like, but you can never leave.

“as she battles uterine cancer”

Good grief what the heck is going on here? I am hearing about this type of cancer in younger and younger women. Is it something in the water? The air? Why does this seem to be becoming more prevalent? Scary stuff.

Just wait until Janet Reno,,I mean Eric Holder hears about this. He will over rule the court and have Eilan,,I mean Rifqa returend rightfully to the safe and loving arms of her Imam,, I mean parents where they will welcome her with open arms and resist all thoughts of family honor. I’m so glad that liberals are so understanding.

Geller is now being sued for $10 million by the attorney who represented the parents of Bary. He alleges slander and libel for Geller accusing him of supporting Hamas.

Bary-case lawyer files $10M defamation lawsuit
Omar Tarazi says he’s been falsely linked to terrorism

The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio lawyer Omar Tarazi is suing a Florida attorney and a blogger he says defamed him in connection with the Rifqa Bary case.

In a civil suit filed in U.S. District Court in Columbus, Tarazi said that attorney John Stemberger and blogger Pamela G. Oshry made statements on national television and on the Web that Tarazi was involved with terrorists.

Tarazi was the attorney for Mohamed and Aysha Bary of the Northeast Side, the parents of Rifqa Bary.

Rifqa, now 18, was involved in a much-publicized attempt to sever herself from her Muslim parents after she converted to Christianity and ran away last year.

She was granted permanent residency in the United States last week, attorney Kort Gatterdam said today. She had been an illegal immigrant.

Tarazi sued Stemberger and Oshry for $10 million on Friday. His complaint states that Stemberger falsely said that Tarazi was being paid by an organization with ties to terrorists and that, essentially, Tarazi was not a qualified attorney.

Tarazi says in his complaint that Oshry, who blogs under the name Pamela Geller, made similar assertions in her blog.

The statements by Stemberger and Oshry “permanently harmed” his personal and professional reputation and his private law practice, the suit says.

“Potential clients that do a simple web search to check on plaintiff’s credentials will find these accusations of perjury, conflict of interest, being unqualified as an attorney,” as well as claims that Tarazi was a member of Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by the United States, the suit says.

“I’m saying I’m not going to take this,” Tarazi said today. “It affects my job, my career, it affects everything. It’s pushback to say that you can’t just call someone a terrorist with no basis and get away with it.”

Tarazi also says in his complaint that the accusations against him were made to influence the legal proceedings involving Bary.
