It may come as a surprise to you, but a rifle is a RANGED weapon. You’ll find it’s more effectively used if you keep your opponents at a distance.
a gun is a gun is a gun.
I have long range weapon....close range weapons
and all can be used at close range if necessary.
in NY very few people have handguns as one needs a permit to own one even for home protection....most people do not bother and keep their deer rifles handy for an all purpose weapon...now a shotgun is a good close range weapon but more and more counties in NY are becoming rifle counties for deer so unless they do a bunch of small game hunting which requires a place to go and in the burbs their is no place to go hunting....when most burb hunters take a trip to hunt....it is generally for deer....hence a deer rifle is most common on Long Island.

While true in an open environment it is somewhat different indoors’ While training to go to Iraq my company did train-up on CQB (close quarters battle; IOW, inside buildings) and the instructors were constantly referring to doorways as “funnels of death” because someone on the other side has reduced the area he has to aim at to that of the doorway.
So, while a rifle may be a “ranged weapon” it is still perfectly capable of being used in close-quarters. A handgun can be used in such a manner too, and there is the added bonus that the doorway would restrict the flow of attackers in to two, or at max three, people at a time giving you some protection from being instantly overwhelmed.
