KABULThe top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.
Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.
"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Gen. Petraeus said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

The military gets its orders from a Muslim thus are compromised.
Most of the rest of America isn’t and are more than willing to make a sound sensible protest even if they must hide their identity, they will burn the Koran regardless of who tries to reason that it will damm their soul.
you have some issues, reading comprehension being one of them.
here's what I said: and don't get me started on how this is straining relationships we have worked very hard to build with the local police/prosecutors/etc...
"straining" is a far cry from "shatter."
a dictionary is your friend.
ok, so maybe not your best friend, how about making one an acquaintance? and while your at it, substitute acquaintance for "best friend" in my question to you...
Face it, you are attempting to defend an indefensible act being contemplated by someone who should know better (a freaking pastor) and therefore you need to attack my comments and me personally.
come to Kabul and work for a year, see how you feel about what this j@ck@ss is doing. It's bad enough that we work outside the wire and are hassled by the ANP daily...now we will have to worry about average Afghans being whipped into a frenzy by the more extreme elements amongst them.
I'd be the first person to dust a terrorist and would not even think twice about it afterward...but I don't work with terrorists...I work with individuals who happened to have different religion than I do that genuinely want to make their country better by eliminating corruption in their government. Not all Muslims are terrorists and the people I work with daily wouldn't consider burning a bible or an American flag...and now I get to spend my time explaining that America has it's own version of extremists that we have to deal with.
you have a great day in your peaceful little part of the world, passing judgments and defending this moron in Florida.
That figures. lol
Not really. Your ad hominem attacks don't add up to anything other than the same old garbage you continually fling.
Address the issues and leave the other nonsense at the door, k?
The same old garbage I usually fling? Is that so? You don’t know my posts very well then. I guess I’ll just ignore the baseless accusations hurled at me in the post I responded to. You obviously have a personal issue with me.
Nice post and God bless you. We don’t have many like you here.
Folks today mostly lack your mettle and that of your era.
They cower easily. I’m glad we had ya’ll when we did.
I don’t think I owe Islam diddly. I don’t think it’s compatible with a constitutional republic or western civilization.
It is a primitive cult of aggression, hegemony and forced submission of the entire world if they have their way.
It is simply another Evil Empire to replace the last vanquished one.
Islam wishes to use our very freedoms we take for granted to ultimately destroy us. We need to limit their immigration here now....or their birth rate will be our death knell.
Many conservatives today are intolerably weak of will and spirit. they are more concerned about never being called bigoted or name-your-minority-phobic than even food and shelter or sex i fear
It’s where our leftist media and academia really kicked our asses in the culture from around 1975 onwards
I’m 53 for the record
btw...who’s the thread crybaby whining to the mod nonstop over poor wuttle Islam’s feelings getting hurt
is this FR’s new posture....do not support burning a Koran?
can someone clarify this? I like to keep up on the rules of engagement around here

Omigosh! We have a real WWII hero in out midst!
Thank you so much, noinfringers2. You and my late daddy are of the same era.
I wish we had more like you, now...but we do have an all voluntary military.
God bless all who decide to volunteer on their own.
What a great group of people we have! It makes me so proud!
You make me proud...;o)
dam...i double posted that rant...sorry..lol..nite
No problem...it gave me a good look at your post. ;o)
I am not defending the freaking pastor I am condemning Petraeus' attack on the 1st Amendment protected rights of American citizens.
...and therefore you need to attack my comments and me personally.
What personal attack on you? It looks to me like you initiated that in this post I'm responding to, #242.
come to Kabul and work for a year, see how you feel about what this j@ck@ss is doing.
My principles wouldn't change in any situation under the sun.
Not all Muslims are terrorists and the people I work with daily wouldn't consider burning a bible or an American flag...
But General Petraeus, and you, seem to think they will turn jihadi at the drop of a hat. Moderate Muslims I assume.
...and now I get to spend my time explaining that America has it's own version of extremists that we have to deal with.
If they are nice rational people it shouldn't be hard to explain the simple common sense idea that not everyone in America is the same. After all they can see that in their own people. Right? Good luck with that.
you have a great day in your peaceful little part of the world, passing judgments and defending this moron in Florida.
Peaceful? Well, it's true, I am not in Florida where the freaking pastor and his flock have received death threats. I'm not in NYC or DC either. I have no idea what judgment I passed other than that there is no nexus between burning the Koran in Florida and violence in Afghanistan other than the reactions of psychotic killers. That is a cause and effect I don't accept as legitimate because I don't believe in pandering to sociopathic forms of insanity.
Once more for the record, I am not defending this church's acts I am defending the right to speak freely. There is a difference that most Americans can readily see.
Thank you for the work you are doing. I will be praying for you and everyone else in the line of fire. And I couldn’t agree with you more about these self-aggrandizing idiots and their selfish, un-Christian demonstration.
Take care!
I also recognize the pastor's protected right to free speech...but that doesn't mean I can't criticize the content, does it?
Petraeus has that same right.
The "Pastor", if he survives his "speech" and is arrested for burning without a permit will likely win a sizable settlement from the police department that arrests him...which really ticks me off.
Whoever is giving the city legal advice (to deny the church a permit...hell, even thinking they need a permit) and/or any police agency that arrests him, ought to have to pay any settlement out of their own pockets.
But I still have the right to call a spade a spade with respect to the conduct of the "pastor" and point out some of the consequences of his exercise of his right.
Regards
Thank you...these days I’ll accept all the prayers I can get...
Sure, what do you expect from that gang of idiots? But I think Petraeus is still deserving of respect on how to fight an insurgency.
“I think hes mistaken on what strengthens and what weakens them in this case.”
I would say that if Petraeus doesn’t know how to fight these people then nobody in charge for the last ten years has known, as he is the only one who has had any success.
I think the lesson is, don’t get involved in fighting insurgencies in the middle East. The sad thing is, that’s a lesson that has been proven time and time again, long before we began our own misadventures, only we chose to ignore it.
I think that’s probably a fair lesson.
I’d add into it one I think we could learn from Europe as well (as Mark Steyn is often highlighting)—which is that Western appeasement of Muslim ‘sensitivities’ and demands is culturally suicidal.
The “church’s” idea of burning the Korans is %100 infantile stupidity .I hate these bastards as much as the next guy but this is a stupid ass idea.
