Anti-war groups battle for survival (BOO-HOO)

As President Barack Obama formally declared an end to combat operations in Iraq this week, the anti-war movement that helped sweep him into office – and that worked for seven years to bring U.S. troops home – finds itself struggling for survival.

Several factors – war fatigue; a deep, lingering recession; and the presence of a Democratic president they helped elect – have drained the energy from organizations that led the fight against the Iraq war. Some of the most influential anti-war activist groups that once summoned half a million people to march against the Iraq war and the policies of President George W. Bush are straining to raise the money and attention to fight what they see as Obama’s military entrenchment in Afghanistan.

“We don’t have a very vibrant anti-war movement anymore,” lamented Medea Benjamin, founder of Code Pink, one of the anti-war movement’s most visible organizations. “The issues have not changed very much….Now we have a surge [in Afghanistan] that we would have been furious about under George Bush, yet it’s hard to mobilize people under Obama. We have the same anti -war movement and not the same passion.”

MoveOn.org, which produced a 2007 anti-war newspaper ad labeling Gen. David Petraeus “General Betray Us” for the surge in Iraq, has largely been silent, despite a similar U.S. strategy in Afghanistan with Petraeus at the helm. Cindy Sheehan, perhaps the most famous anti-war protester, believes the peace movement is over. And United for Peace and Justice – once the largest of three major anti-war coalitions – has practically dissolved.

It’s the March of Dimes all over again. If you get your way and don’t have a purpose, you have to start a whole new campaign.

Really? What a shocker. That's because it was never about the war itself. It was always about the fact that a Republican President was in charge of the war effort. Once obama took office, the anti-war crowd suddenly lost interest in protesting the war and completely disappeared.

Their guy was in office, so protesting the war would be the equivalent of protesting obama. They couldn't possibly do that. It would be "racist".

I’m sure things will pick up for them in 2013.

The homeless will reappear too.

Can't they do a big march against ‘global warming’? It's a shame to see all of that youthful energy and stupidity go to waste.

One would think they could mobilize anti-war hippies (who smell of patchouli oil + body odor) to attend a vegetarian protest against meat consumption.
They might also be able to engage them to march against the Halliburton firm, even though they have absolutely no clue what that company does.

Most people were involved with these groups simply out of blind hate for Bush.

Wanna see the ugly face of hate? Just talk to these clowns.

The funny part is they'll use diversity, acceptance, and understanding in the SAME SENTENCE they're talking about wishing death upon President Bush.
Leftists find no irony in that notion at all. They can't see why it doesn't make sense. Perhaps I'm giving them too much credit.

exactly — what we saw during the Bush yrs was a smaller hard-core of traitors-by-conviction mobilizing larger numbers of traitors-by-opportunism

the latter were/are mainly aroused to *use* anti-war issues against Bush and Republicans..... now that the Democrats control WH and Congress all those opportunistic protestors have faded away

the anti-war “movement” is left with only the hard-core commie traitors of the Medea Benjamin type

all the fellow travelers are now quietly longing for Obozo to get his act together

Ah, they aren’t anti-war, they’re anti-American. Specifically, they are anti-Republican, anti-Conservative, anti-Christian American. They have never protested wars, except those involving America and they always take the side of the enemy.

“These leftist groups always seem to be predominately white’’. Yes they do. Old hippies and tweedy types still living with their parents. Sucks now that maybe mom and dad are losing the house. Stinks too there’s no George Bush to blame this on.

KFC my azz, I hope she has flat tree rat for dinner and breakfast. Spiders for lunch. And the delicious aroma of that dumpster to keep her mind focused on the direction of her career as a total POS nitwit. Sleep well tonight bish.

May her honorable son rest in peace.

Common sense says take away incentive and observe the effects. Whether those effects are good or bad depends on the audience.

Global warming aka climate change is merely a useful vacuum for the tantrum of these perpetual malcontents.

Wouldn't that be a step up from when she visited Venezuela and laid beneath a sweating Hugo Chavez?
