I would suggest if there is an undercurrent of fear, it may be of this reporter, and how he might twist and turn anything they might say.You are correct. The locals know this guy's sole purpose in talking to them is to "get something" on Palin. They're not afraid. What he's calling "fear" is simply his perception and projection of the distrust, cautiousness and loathing they actually feel towards him, but are too polite to tell him to his face.
