You are right. The timing is QUITE remarkable! Most of what the Federal government says (At least 51%) and the media is Bull$hit!

Non producing, shut-in well. No leak, no spill,no sheen. No deaths. Still burning. They were sanding and welding and-boom.That’s the latest from local news.

Mariner Energy. Completely engulfed in flames at 9:30 am. Production reportedly completely shut in. Jindal explaining live now. Nearly burned out now. One injury. Everyone accounted for. There were 7 active wells on the platform, one caught fire . All reported shut down.
Conflicting reports about a sheen sighted.

The Latest Rig Explosion IS Leaking Oil — Mile-Long Sheen Seen
Earlier it was reported that a rig owned by Mariner Energy had exploded, but that there were no injuries or fatalities, and that it was a non-producing platform that was not at risk of spewing oil.
WRONG.
According to the Coast Guard, via @breakingnews, there IS a mile-long sheen that’s visible from the platform.
