Federal retirees rate The Villages as ‘runaway favorite’

THE VILLAGES — Renee Braun laughed as she read the introduction to the cover story in the September issue of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association magazine.

“Yes, it should be The Villages,” exclaimed the Village of Summerhill resident who volunteers as the service officer for the association’s Orange Blossom Chapter 2234, serving The Villages and surrounding communities. “It definitely should be.”

The Villages emerged as the “runaway favorite” among the 600 or so association members who responded to a magazine survey for a story on the best retirement communities.

Our local retirement area (Bella Vista, Arkansas), for years had a large number of lots for sale in really rough land. It was cheap, around $600.00 a lot. The purpose was to get people to buy it FOR CLUB PRIVELEDGES ONLY as it was almost unusable land and was really worth the $600.00 for golfing, boating shooting and other activities. You live in the area, but have access to all these club houses!

Then some California company came in, bought up all these useless lots and the PONCH began to advertise them on TV for the low, low price of $12,000.00 a lot! That is $11,400.00 fore than what the land was worth.

I’d like to consider investing in hospices local to The Villages. Sounds like a real income and growth opportunity. I mean, like, these are the kind of folks whose families don’t object to an accelerated check-out schedule, right? So per cap, they’ll push their spouses and parents into hospice at the drop of an IV needle.

The world is an interesting place, and a worthwhile place. In truth, there is no such thing as “retirement”, except that which the Angel of Death delivers by order of the Boss.

These “retirees” think they are exempt of all life’s responsibilities. By their souls they are not. And one has to wonder just how conservative a person who stays in such a place of death is, exactly.

Might as well suck the taxpayer dry in a nice climate.

Lots of available gals. After gay marriage makes polygamy legal, it will be a male heaven if you live long enough.

Well, lots of gals won’t be beneficial to me - and who wants to fight other 90 year old gals for a 95 year old guy?;) The operative words for the next sentence is “live long enough” Retirement age is a dangerous time to go sowing your wild oats :)

Are you 90? God bless!

I hope to get to the Villages young enough to if not sew some wild oats, at least knit some. I hope my wife of 35 years doesn’t mind.

I was down there a few years ago in March, jogging shirtless down the cart path and was repeatedly ogled by the ladies. Well I think they were ogling me. Either that or they were giving me the evil eye to get out of the way.

I’m not up on what passes for ogling these days.

You never know.

I heard Andy Griffith, who played a down-to-earth, good guy, all-American Sheriff, is a liberal jerk in real life.

Me neither.
No I am not 90 but most probably will be 90 before I get there. I see the commercials for the Villages and it does seem like a wonderful place to live. You guys just die before we do that is why there are more gals than guys there. It's the same way in nursing homes and church. Beware if a new unmarried guy happens to join a church - it's a hen fight - ain't pretty! And, in nursing homes some of these 90 year olds end up marrying and the other geezers are like bees going “from flower to flower.” Men are amazing. I hope your wife of 35 years doesn't see the commercials with all the gals or you will have to put your Village plans on hold.

My wife has been to the Villages with me and is shopping for a house and job. She is fully aware of the female to male ratio and the infamous women. =)

She’s not worried because many of my umm ..plans... have been put on hold over the years =).

Play golf? Do ya?

Most everyone in my family played golf but I tended more to horses and fishing. Sounds like you have the green grass already (you know, the grass is always greener....). Anyway, she sounds on top of things. You can still work and be in a retirement community?

My wife who is a year older than me plans on continuing to work. She’s in real estate so there’s no heavy lifting. =)

The fact of the matter is that she will most likely outlive me by many years unless she has an unfortunate accident and trips into a wood chipper.

I mostly am kidding about the Villages womanizing thing. All hat, no cows. Is that what westerners say?

If I had to start over with another woman, I don’t think I would know what to do. Is there talking involved? =)

Funny. I think every man most likely asks the same question to themselves. Not only talking, but you gotta listen!!! What a chore:)But, you know what, after being husbandless for a while, I find myself asking the same questions. Do I miss talking, discussing, listening (only on occasion), sharing my closet, sharing my bathroom, just sharing in general? My answer is NO - can’t do it. So it looks like I would be in the same boat as the guys. I am quite sure, if your lovely wife escapes the shredder, she wouldn’t replace you. If nothing else, too much trouble;)
