This reminds me of an old story I found reprinted in our local newspaper. The date was 1974 when the eighth grade classes of the local school traveled to Washington DC...as they left their bus to walk to the Washington Monument a large group of black teens threatened, harassed, and physically attacked five of the group of eighth graders.

No one was seriously hurt, but one of the Flora students was struck in the face, one girl suffered a cut lip, two boys were struck in the back of the neck, and one assailant pulled the hair of one of the female chaperones.

The incident happened as the group were marching in a body from their tour bus toward the Washington Monument. There were a large number of black teens in the area, more than the number of students, and they were bigger and older than the 8th graders.

According to one report, before the local students got halfway to the monument, one of the black teens blew a whistle and they quickly surrounded the local students, shouting obscenities, threatening, darting in and out and shaking their fists in the faces of the kids.

The chaperones turned the group around and they retreated back to their bus in an orderly manner. It was reported that none of the students had given any provocation for the attack, and none of the students or adults fought back in defense.

MY QUESTION: Was this a hate crime? Was it racist? Or What?

This reminds me of an old story....

It reminds me of something as well. I lived in DC in the early '80s.

The KKK had applied for, and received a permit to march. It should be appreciated that President Reagan & I were the only two white guys that actually lived in DC.

The locals went nuts. They posted signs & leaflets everywhere about the date, time, and place those KKK clowns were going to be there.

The police correctly realized that the locals were laying in wait, and that violence was guaranteed. The chief of police contacted the head Grand Wizard(or whatever they are called). He advised of the certain violence that would occur, and asked if the KKK would consider calling off the march.

The KKK complied, and did not show up.

Apparantly that was not enough for the local populous, who spent the day advertised burning their own houses, businesses, and cars. They rioted in their own neighborhoods, and against their own neighbors.

The KKK just smiled.
