I’m going to pose a rhetorical question:
Is it possible that Mitt Romney intends to run for president in 2012 AND that he actually WANTS to ensure that he loses to Barack Obama?
I think it's pretty clear that's what McCain did and IIRC Romney suspended his campaign earlier than he had to which gave McCain a huge break in getting the nomination.
Somebody's plan is being executed and some of the players are "ours". The biggest obstacle they face is the totally grassroots TEA party which they never saw coming and are currently working to co-opt (per Trent Lott in a rare moment of honesty).
Remember that Romney came to Arizona to campaign for McCain against the TEA Party's choice JD Hayworth.
