Agree with him or not, Huckabee is an authentic leader
My SA ^ | 8/29/10 | Leonard Pitts

“I'm a conservative, but I'm not mad at everybody over it.”

Mike Huckabee

I'm writing this to say just one thing: I like Mike.

That would be Michael Dale Huckabee, former Baptist preacher, former governor of Arkansas, former GOP presidential candidate, current Fox News personality, the guy quoted above being flagrantly reasonable during an interview on “The Daily Show.” I like Mike.

The proximate reason I say that is his recent refusal to support a knuckleheaded idea being touted by many of his conservative brethren: altering the 14th Amendment to curtail illegal immigration.

But I could have said it a few months ago when he sided with Arizona Hispanics who feared that state's new immigration law could be used to profile them. I could have said it two years ago when he dissected the Jeremiah Wright controversy with a sense of nuance and compassion seldom found among conservatives when they speak of race.

“We've got to cut some slack,” he said, “to people who grew up being called names, being told you have to sit in the balcony when you go to the movie, you have to go to the back door to go into the restaurant, you can't sit out there with everyone else. ... And you know what? Sometimes peopledo have a chip on their shoulder and resentment, and you have to just say, ‘I probably would, too. In fact, I may have hadmore of a chip on my shoulder, had it been me.'” I like Mike.

And, yes, I know what some of you are thinking: I like Mike because he agrees with me.

Yes, we have points of concurrence. But on any number of issues — reproductive rights, guns, same-sex marriage,

I "like" Huckabee too. Seem like a fine, personable fellow. But if Leonard Pitts thinks you are reasonable, then you better re-evaluate your positions.

SO much for his fake 'hardline' he adopted on illegals during the 2008 primary.

Huckabee is about as “authentic” a leader as Obama.

I like Huck, in a hick way. He’s not an economic or political conservative. He’s somewhat social conservative. A bit.

I don’t think of him as a conservative. He’s a populist.

BAM! Hit that nail smack dab on the head!

I often agree with Huckabee, but he is no leader.

Try the house next door. They might buy this.

The uber-lib Leonard Pitts? No thanks. I’ll pass.

Huckabee should stick to stand up comedy. I’m not convinced that his family turned out okay. Seems to me if a man cannot lead his own family, how can one expect him to lead an entire country.

Mike H. seems like a nice guy, but an endorsement from a schmuck like Pitts? Sorry Mike, but you are toast.

Hucklebee is far too soft, warm and fuzzy to be President. Our next Pres. will need a strong backbone and then some...as well as those he or she appoints. Hucks likely a nice guy but not one I would at all vote for.

Uh oh.

I seem to remember someone else who had problems in that department.

And a few currently.

Huckabee will do anything for attention and admiration. Hence staying in the Pres race way after he was toast. At least Romney knew when to quit, but Huck just kept going along sucking up resources and fanfare.

I hope not...we need our candidates to focus on winning more than competeing with one another per say....hopefully there will not be so many running to muddy the waters as in the last race.

I don’t trust Huckabee. I don’t trust him because he is loyal to himself. He wants it both ways; liberal support as well as the conservative vote. He speaks out of both sides of his mouth.

His platform is: power. He wants to be the President not out of a conviction to implement a true conservative policy, but rather, to hold the most powerful political seat in the world. And that kind of platform and politician is what our Founding Fathers warned us about.

Huck belongs on the comedy central channel.

Pissant, the rest of us, not blinded by our support of Duncan Hunter, saw this from the beginning.

Welcome to the party, Pal!
