If you're in the market for a job and haven't been having much luck finding one, a trip to the New York State fair could help. As our Katie Gibas reports, the New York State Department of Labor is helping fairgoers create and perfect their resumes and find jobs, all for free.
NEW YORK STATE FAIR -- Even with a degree and all sorts of certifications, it's still a tough job market.
"It's very hard. I can't really find anything that will pay more than minimum wage, so that's why I went back to school and got my licensing," said Endwell resident Kim Hill.
And now that Hill is in the job market, something she never even thought of is here to help. The New York State Department of Labor has a booth set up at the State Fair to help people in every aspect of their job search.
"They think that they're looking for work. They think that they're using all the tools, but they don't know what's available," said Linda Chapman, NYS Labor Department Supervisor.
Representatives are helping fairgoers by showing them how to navigate their website to find jobs, create resumes and even get special training, all for free.
"I haven't done a resume in probably 15 years, so that was really going to be my first struggle. But I just talked to Linda here and she said they'll help me do that for free. So that's excellent," Hill said.
"If you go to our job bank, you will see that there are lots of jobs in different areas. It's not optimum, but there are jobs. So at the Department of Labor, we give you those tools to help you get that job," Chapman said.
And it's not just for the adults. They even have a display and people to help teens and young adults find work and learn important job skills.
"There's less jobs for the youth coming out of school or in school. It's a tough economy, but we at the Department of Labor, we are doing all that we can to assist those that are in the workforce," Chapman said.
So taking just a few minutes to talk with someone at the Department of Labor might just change your job search for the better.
The New York State Labor Department is set up in the Center of Progress Building at the state fair. There are also plenty of resources online to help with your job search. For more information, visit www.labor.ny.gov or call 1-888-4-NYSDOL.
