Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson violated rules, steered scholarships to relatives (Democrat)
Dallas Morning News ^ | 8/29/2010 | By TODD J. GILLMAN and CHRISTY HOPPE

Longtime Dallas congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships to four relatives and a top aide's two children since 2005, using foundation funds set aside for black lawmakers' causes.

The recipients were ineligible under anti-nepotism rules of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which provided the money. And all of the awards violated a foundation requirement that scholarship winners live or study in a caucus member's district.

Johnson, a Democrat, denied any favoritism when asked about the scholarships last week. Two days later, she acknowledged in a statement released by her office that she had violated the rules but said she had done so "unknowingly" and would work with the foundation to "rectify the financial situation."

Some great lines in the article. “Initially, she said, “I recognized the names when I saw them. And I knew that they had a need just like any other kid that would apply for one.” Had there been more “very worthy applicants in my district,” she added, “then I probably wouldn’t have given it” to the relatives. “
So any child denied in her district (or the parents of that child) need only prove they were more or in this case, equally, worthy and her problem mushrooms because of that statement.
“Johnson, a former chairwoman of the caucus who has served on the board that oversees the foundation, said she wasn’t fully aware of the program rules and emphasized that she didn’t “personally benefit.” “
Serves on the board but what? too busy to know the rules? She Maxines cousin or other relation?
Finally,””We look at the kids that apply, look at their qualifications, and if they have the application there with all the ingredients, we try to help,” she said. “I doubt if there is anybody in my district going to question me giving $1,000 to a kid to help him with college.” See? It doesn’t matter how i do my business in my district. In my district i’m the law.

I'm not surprised at what they've been up to.

I'm surprised that someone's been calling the members out on it.

Question is why now...?

Black members of Congress are being targeted by racist white reporters.

Everybody does it, but only black members of Congress are being exposed and criticized.

Black congressmen have a right to not follow rules because of years of discrimination against them. Reparations by way of bending the law are necessary to redress old wrongs.

(sarcasm/)

This is just another example of what our Overlords think is their role in our society. The rules are for us, the peons, and they can do anything they want with anyone's money because they are our superiors. This horrible woman has been a poverty pimp and a joke in Congress for years and years. Now her true colors are emerging.

Friday, Victor David Hanson wrote:

The public senses there are two standards in America — one for elite overseers, quite another for the supposedly not-to-be-trusted public. The anger over this hypocrisy surfaces over matters from the trivial to the profound. Sometimes the pique arises because the spread-the-wealth, we-all-have-skin-in-shared-sacrifice presidential sermons don’t apply to those who do the preaching...the luminaries who call for bigger government, higher taxes, and more green coercion — now appear to the public as disingenuous, living lives in abject contradiction to the utopian bromides they would apply to others. So too with the media...

This is further proof that LIB/DIM (and coincidentally black) politicians are corrupt, racist grifters. And what does this say about those who received the “scholarships”? Integrity anyone??? Losers all!

Eddie Bernice’s Johnson needs to be replaced with Stephen Broden. A decent man backed by the Tea Party. Check him out on BoobTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6gJVzXmjtA. Vote for Broden!!!

Eddie Bernice Johnson reminds me of the Obamas and their non-stop vacations and golf games: Get all you can, while you can, whether it’s right or not, especially when someone else is footing the bill.

Until now, I didn’t think Broden stood a chance against Eddie Bernice’s machine.

It would be WONDERFUL if this sent that impressive man to Washington.

When they call the roll in the Senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer “Present” or “Not guilty.”

No man is above the law and no man is below it: nor do we ask any man's permission when we ask him to obey it.

True but the people who founded and built this nation have also abdicated responsibility. They (we) are perfectly fine with importing Mexican/Central American slave labor here to grow cheaper food etc....And perfectly fine with having Asian slaves supply us with LCD TVs and computers. We haven’t built computer component here for at least 15 years

Is there no limit to the holes these guys store money to be taken out when they need it? If you start looking the places that provide access to money are incredible...I’m still trying to understand the billions going to black farmers....

....and you know it has gotten so bad that the DMN had NO choice but to do a story. One of the most liberal papers still in existence doing a story on a deity like EBJ. Her district was carved out for her in large part by the DMN demands.

SHOCKER!!! — Another Black Caucus crook. Will her fellow Black Caucus members publicly reject her or Charles Rangel? Heck no! They are probably running scams too

I wonder how Sheila Jackson Lee, the black show horse from Houston, gets by unscathed. Perhaps her turn is just around the corner.

He is a fine conservative.
People who can’t vote for him can still help get him elected by making phone calls.

We in Texas tried to help our Freepers in other states using our cell phones for calls.
maybe some Freeps can help Mr Broden

Sheila Jackson Lee’s criminality is her stupidity. Remember her comment this year about there being two Vietnams; north and south? Remember she’s a champion for women’s equality here in America, too; she wants us to join other notable countries such as China and Afghanistan by drawing up similar legislation and joining *them* to ensure American women’s rights.

Whuh?

Sheila is just one of those people who enjoys doing things when she sees fit. Remember when she took a call during a Townhall Q & A last year; right in the middle of an exchange between a constituent and herself? Her latest rudeness occurred just a few weeks ago, when Sheila was seen catching some shut-eye while her fellow congresscritter was speaking on the floor of the House. Makes me think of the dearly departed “sheets,” former KKK-er, and how he used to take momentary naps on the Hill, too. But I digress...
