People keep asking for photos of known crowds for comparison sake and help in estimating the size of the crowd for Glen Beck's rally today. Here goes - using Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor Michigan for a nice even crowd size.

What does it look like to you?

Under the trees were packed with people. Mostly on the right hand side. We were there and walked about half around the event.

The chairs and blankets LOWER THE DENSITY. If it this were that way all the way around the treed area that'd be several tens of thousands fewer peoople than if it were as densely packed as the open areas seem in the photos.

Means it wasn't too hot today ~ 85 degrees maybe?

There were chairs and blankets but most people were standing. It was crowded.

The absolutely most crowded I've ever seen the Mall was the 1976 fireworks display ~ for the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

We took our Chevy Van with 20 people in the back, and our own porta potty. Ended up parked under 14th street bridge and we walked half way over ~ but could not go further.

That was the ONLY event in DC where I've seen pedestrian crowds backing up Shirley HIghway!

A large area near the Lincoln Memorial was offlimits for fireworks ~ that was about half the space occupied by today's event.

We were on the road for 3 hours back to Springfield after that event in 1976 ~ and your typical fireworks show will see a 30 minute backup from DC to Springfield.

We drank all the beer, ate all the cookies and potato chips, and filled that porta potty to the TOP!!!

Some uninformed people continue to believe that an anti-Vietnam War demonstration had more people, but as I made my way to work that morning from Arlington to the Federal Triangle, I was in the middle of it all and got to work in about an hour.

Dr. Spock and a couple of hundred women (his harem no doubt) ran past me ahead of some guys teargasing them. Having been in the Army I made an oblique movement and missed out on that stuff.

I wasn't there for LBJ's inaugural, but there are those who claim it was the most attended with as many as 1.8 million people. Frankly that's a BS number ~ although Eisenhower's funeral was quite extensive ~ people were turning out to see every head of state on Earth PLUS Charles DeGaulle ~ who was a head taller than the next tallest guy, Bubba Smith!

1976 still seems to me to have had the most repercussions in the suburbs in terms of traffic ~ and if LBJ had 1.8 million, the fireworks that year were well over 2.0 million. Based on that standard, Obama had less than a million ~ but it was exceedingly orderly compared to most of these things.

Today's Glenn Beck thing has to be between 300,000 and 500,00 ~ total attendees.

I remember that. According to Channel 9 News at the time, the crowd was estimated at 1 million.

I think at least 500,000 today. It was a blast and I’m going to bed.

No flags behind either man, at least from these angles, but Sharpton's banner seems more about him than about Mr. King's speech/sentiments.

Just noticed that the DC mayor was booed at Sharpton's rally. Will have to find out why.

We waited in line to board the metro at Franconia on the blue line from just before 8 until 11AM. We were told about 20,000 had already ridden from this one stop so far. There was no end in sight to the line waiting when we got on the metro. By the time we got to the rally it was after noon. Lots of folks were already leaving and many still arriving the crowd numbers changed all day but it was huge.

I would say for each person who could go, there were 50 who couldn’t go.

I was there and eyeballed the crowd to be at least 500k. The crowd was wall to wall and there were people packed under the trees toward Constitution and a lot (and I mean a lot) of people behind the WWII Memorial back to the Washington Monument.

Ground level shots are very misleading because long focal lengths (telephoto shots) will create the illusion of very full and dense crowds. The ground level Obama inauguration shots are proof of this when compared with the satellite shots.

Crowds massed at the front of each section leading down the mall may fill only 1/3 of each, but from the podium look 100% full.

I was at Woodstock in 1969 and also at the recent 9/12 march on the Capitol when 1.2 million showed up ,, it is my estimation that there were between 700 and 800 thousand on the mall yesterday . Beck has a bigger turnout when he directly opposes the current regime for sure but it is very important to restore this countries faith in God . The communist element on the left has waged a war on Chirstians and their values for over 40 years and have advanced their cause along the way . I am a soldier in the Army of Christ ,, “ you might call me a lifer “ . . .

There are definately areas of grass showing through. I was half tempted to photoshop some more people but then thought better of it. Would not be good to have that pic out there as amunition for DUmmies.

It seems odd that someone has not done exactly as you say with the clean aerial and grid count. You are of course correct.

Note the pics. To me they looked cropped somewhat in an attempt to hide the real number of people.

Definately cropped. These people are professionals. They think about what they are doing when they put a picture up. The only objective presentation is to show a full shot of the crowd.
