BOSTON, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- The Salvation Army of Massachusetts has decided to stop getting money from United Way, setting up its own workplace fund drives instead.
Major William Bode sent an e-mail message to United Way Friday, the Boston Globe reported. He discussed the relationship with Michael Durkin, president of United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley over lunch Thursday.
"Every year for the last three years I have communicated with the United Way saying our allocation is going down and I'm very much concerned about that,'' Bode said. "Our advisory board and board of directors had to look at that and say, 'What is happening with the relationship?'"
United Way functions as an umbrella group, collecting donations and passing the money on to other non-profit groups. Some contributions are earmarked for specific organizations.
Durkin said he hopes to revive the relationship between the two groups.
"Our partnership is too strong to end on an e-mail,'' he said.
The Salvation Army's best-known fundraising effort is its Christmastime appeal. As a United Way beneficiary, the group could not engage in its own workplace drives.
I had forgotten about the selling of donated cigarettes and the charges for coffee. My Dad had no love whatsoever for the Red Cross.
And you had to travel 20 miles from the front for the privilege of buying from the RC.
I have gotten into some trouble on this thread because The Salvation Army is on at least one Pro-Life boycott lists for Planned Parenthood.
Do you agree/disagree that if an organization is guilty of helping Planned Parenthood that it is basically helping the abortion movement, and indirectly helping to fund such movement?
Or do I need to prove actual funding of abortion by The Salvation Army to show them as an organization unworthy to contribute to?

Why would pro-life groups recommend that The Salvation Army be boycotted unless there is a good reason?
The stables were located on Belle Isle and there was a precinct building there also. That's where my grandfather was stationed. In the late 50's I'd spend the summers with my dad and grandparents and one day each summer my grandmother and I would take the bus to Belle Isle and we'd spend the day with my grandfather.
He would always take us on a ride around the island in the police car then he'd take us over to the stables and the guys would take me for a ride on one of the mounted horses.
Then grandma and I would go on the pony rides and stuff then towards the end of the day grandpa would take us over to the harbormaster and the guys would always take us out for a boat ride on the river.......Those were great days.
Also famous for watching submarine races....:O) Belle Isle was a great park with an arboretum and small zoo. As a teen I loved to go through the arboretum, they had beautiful orchids and a waterfall in one of the rooms..

The Salvation Army is on the 'Dishonorable Mention' section of the Boycott List for "refusing to take a clear public stand against abortion in cases of rape, incest, fetal deformity, etc., and some offices have funded Planned Parenthood."They are the topic of about a tenth of the emails we received in the month of December.
Their International Leader, General Shaw Clifton, is on record, in response to a yes/no question asking if the Salvation Army is against abortion:
"That's too simple. We are not as conservative as our catholic brothers and sisters. There are situations in which abortion is the lesser evil, for instance in cases of severe deformities of the foetus, [or] rape."

Quite honestly, anything beyond Gen. Clifton's interview is just 'more nails in the coffin'.
Sadly there are many Salvation Army supporters, volunteers and employees who simply don't know what is really happening. If a quote about the benefits of abortion on the Salvation Army's website, from, not a renegade employee, but their own leader, General Shaw Clifton, speaking on behalf of the organization, isn't enough to make someone think twice about supporting them, there isn't much we can do. The same applies to allowing access to Salvation Army facilities by Planned Parenthood, regardless of the reason; it also applies to the IPPF locations being supported by the Salvation Army.
In addition to General Clifton's speech, which, by the way, has yet to be retracted, there are also various Planned Parenthood locations listing The Salvation Army as a "Valued Partner", "Donor", etc. Also, there are Salvation Army 'community resource guides' listing Planned Parenthood under the health category, and Planned Parenthood newsletters stating that The Salvation Army has brought young girls to them.

It is actually humorous (and sad) when you read what the Salvation Army of New Zealand has to say about tobacco use Vs. abortion. The tobacco opinion is short and to-the-point, but in the abortion standard there are loopholes;
Tobacco:
The Salvation Army is totally opposed to the production, marketing and use of tobacco.
Abortion:
The Salvation Army believes in the sanctity of all human life including that of the unborn child. It is opposed to abortion on demand or as a means of birth control.
As recently as last Fall, Planned Parenthood of NE Ohio was acknowledging the Salvation Army for allowing them access to their facilities.

Even worse is this link to the Salvation Army in South Asia in which one of the 'Outreach/AID' programs is an "abortion workshop" (maybe they're trying to say "post-abortion counseling workshop", but that is NOT how the world will read it!
