Cornyn backs off birthright citizenship debate

HIDALGO — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn on Friday backed off his support of Congress taking up birthright citizenship after earlier joining prominent Republicans who have called for a review of the 14th Amendment.

"It is going after a symptom rather than the cause of the problem in the first place," Cornyn said.

Cornyn, the head of the GOP Senate campaign committee, softened his stance while visiting a port of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border. He met with the Texas Border Coalition, a group of local mayors and business leaders focused on border security and traffic backlogs at ports that affect commerce.

The coalition also opposes calls to deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. but whose parents are illegal immigrants. Birthright citizenship is a constitutional right under the 14th Amendment.

Hopefully, Cornyn will be replaced by a TEA party-vetted conservative candidate next time he runs. That will be four years from now, and the GOP will look totally different by then, God willing it.

Not to worry. When we throw these assholes out it will be one of the first things fixed.

Why not go after the symptoms AND the cause?

Cornyn is a schmuck.

A spineless weasel in a long line of spineless weasels. Yet another shining example of what is wrong with the Republican Party. It's not about doing what is right. It's about them staying in office.

Cornyn is a Jim Leach, Lindsey Graham, hand-wringing wimp. Who'd expect him to stand strong. You have to have a backbone to be able to stand.

What the Ruling Class doesn't get, is that Americans highly value American Citizenship and don't like to see it handed out like sheets of toilet paper. We're NOT post-American. We're NOT global citizens of the world. We believe American citizenship should be reserved for those who want to become Americans. It's that simple.

Birthright citizenship is anathema to the concept of being an American. It should be earned as suggested by R.A. Heinlein. Military service, yes, successful completion of an education program with testing for current events, history and constitution, yes, etc.

The greatest of gifts given freely become valueless; public education, food, housing, medical care or citizenship.

Birthright citizenship should be ended and earned citizenship implemented.
