White accepts fall debate; Perry stays uncommitted

SAN ANTONIO — Democrat Bill White said Friday that he will take the stage for a gubernatorial debate this fall sponsored by the state's largest newspapers and Austin public television station KLRU-TV.

Republican Gov. Rick Perry made no commitment.

On the day the Houston Chronicle and other debate sponsors formally invited the candidates to the Oct. 19 debate in Austin, Perry's campaign continued to say that he will not debate until White releases income tax returns from his years as deputy energy secretary in the mid-1990s.

"We will be ready for a debate when Bill White releases his tax returns," said Perry spokesman Mark Miner.

White, the former Houston mayor, would not directly say why he won't release those tax returns. But he noted that tax returns for the years he was mayor are online, and his campaign has released the personal financial statements he had to file while in the federal government.

Perry has his warts but he's miles above Bill White.

That’s my assessment of the situation. It’s a pitiful situation: The Democrats had no candidate but White— whom Houstonians joyously showed the door. I vowed I’d never vote for Perry again, but I’m willing to vote for Perry to keep White out.

White was term limited and looks like Perry thinks he should be King of Texas for life.

As usual, the choice ends up being "the best of the worst". There has to be someone better out there. Texas is a big place.

Whether he was term-limited or whether he was not re-elected, the people of Houston hold no love or sentimental notions for former mayor White. I regard your king-of-Texas-for-life comment as silly hyperbole. Worthy of that Democrat idiot Bob Krueger. [See today’s Houston Chronicle editorial page.]

Hyperbole it maybe but King Perry hasn’t given any indication he going away anytime soon. So we are stuck with the Rino King for a while longer.
