US President Barack Obama has approved US$12 million for an ongoing project aimed at cleaning up dioxin that has contaminated the soil and water in and around the Da Nang Airport.
The announcement was made by congressman Eni Faleomavaega (D-American Samoa) on August 26, during a three-day visit to Vietnam.
Faleomavaega's visit was aimed at discussing the two countries relationship, including cooperative efforts to mitigate Agent Orange contamination in Vietnam.
Last year, the Obama administration dedicated $3 million to dioxin cleanup efforts in the central city of Da Nang, where the airport was listed by scientists as one of several hotspots throughout the country.
Da Nang Airport was once used by the US Air Force as a base of operations. During the war, US forces untold quantities of defoliant chemicals loaded onto planes to be sprayed over the countryside.
It is believed that US forces sprayed over 12 million gallons of defoliats in Vietnam throughout the course of the war.
The chemicals were meant to deprive Vietnamese forces of "food and cover." The campaign ended up having long-term effects on US soldiers and millions of Vietnamese civilians.
The substance has been linked to increased instances of birth defects and at least 12 chronic diseases - including Spinal Bifidia and several types of cancer.
Too bad for the Vets I guess...
Why do I have the impression that America does not have a leader? Been this way since... November, 2008? ....
Really kicked around this idea since January 20 2009... is America floundering, or is it just me?
And what country will come to our aid if the American Government is taken by, say, an illegal usurper?
God help me, I hate this Barry guy!
Using that logic, shouldn’t we be compensating the people of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dredsen, The Southern United States, Pyongyang, etc.??
Yet the government has no money to assist the hundreds of thousands of US Marines and dependents poisoned by the water at Camp Lejeune, NC from 1957 to 1987. Instead the government has consistently covered up evidence of contamination and resisted further investigation. Meanwhile thousands of us deal with cancer and other side effects on our own. We can send millions overseas to clean up poisons but there is nothing for those who served and were unknowingly poisoned at home.

No no no.. I am just pointing out that our money should go to something more logical and moral then bailing out the CEOs of Banks and Car Industry and the damn Palistinians.. 900 million dollars to them. How many bullets can 900 million buy? And I am speaking as the Son of a Vietnam Vet who died 30 years after the war because of the mental scars he recieved.... And no he was not a weak man he was ruined by his treatment and the way he felt when he got back... He said to me shortly before he died.. “Hey Doug, you and I should go to Nam and I will take you up to Dak To”. Unfortunately I never got to do that. Sorry..
I believe the process for individual citizens to receive aid is called unionized government jobs.
Yeah, but look at the color of that luggage.
“American grass.” The term Vietnamese apply to what replaces trees/forests killed by herbicide spraying. Quang Tri/Thua Thien Provinces especially hard hit. Alouhi Valley, Rung Sat Special Zone, and of course Da Nang.
And no one discusses the nearly 1000 spray missions the CIA conducted with their own fleet of Provider Aircraft, based in Laos.
Screw viet nam. nobama hates America and feels America and Americans deserve to suffer. What a feckless fool of a president nobama is.
They should build a memorial to the dead from Cambodia instead.
This guy is on the payroll of any dictator across the planet.
Forget Agent Orange...that’s just the cover.
FOLLOW THE MONEY!
That money would have helped a lot of veterans who sprayed or worked on Operation Ranch Hand aircraft.
Nice to know what Obama’s doing with our money after he gets bored using it to restore mosques......
Words Fail Me.
And That’s not often.
It occurs to me that Agent Orange burns. I suggest around the clock application of Napalm to the area, preferably from the air so as not to endanger the clean up crews.
Under normal circumstances this would be a wonderful act of charity. Except that he is using OUR money and taking ALL the credit for it.
