On public transit today I saw something I'd never seen before. A lady clad in a black abayah boarded the bus. She HAD HER FACE COVERED so only her eyes were showing. However, when she approached the driver to pay her fare, she uncovered the rest of her face. When she sat down in her seat, she covered the lower half of her face with her scarf again.
There were other women on board also in Muslim dress. They were several seats back, all with uncovered faces. I had the impression, however, that they looked on the covered lady with approval.
I believe I will be seeing more "covered faces" in the neighborhood. Not a good thing when someone needs to check your ID to see if that's your bank account, credit card, driver's license, employee ID, etc.
The incident made me reflect on a recent news article's statement about Muslims in Denmark and the changes a society undergoes when Muslims become an increasingly larger percentage of the population. The article indicated that the threshold for problems was around 4 or 5 percent. For what it's worth, Wikipedia has the U.S. at 0.8 percent as of October 2009.
