Sen. John McCain acknowledged his primary rivals during his victory speech after winning Tuesday's Arizona Republican primary, but not warmly.
It took until the sixth paragraph of his acceptance speech, and his remarks notably mentioned his closest rival, J.D. Hayworth, last.
"This was a tough, hard-fought primary, and my opponents, Jim Deakin and Congressman Hayworth, and their families and supporters, deserve credit for having the courage to enter the arena, and give so much of themselves to the candidate they believed in," McCain said. "I wish them well in the future."
Deakin was taking a wild stab at public office, whereas Hayworth was a six-term congressman before losing to Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-Ariz.) in 2006.
Hayworth finished Tuesday with more than 30 percent of the vote a bloc unlikely to warm to McCain. Hayworth was just as cold toward the senator in his concession speech.
"Elections are clarifying moments," he said after conceding to McCain.
Hayworth said voters determined McCain was a "better custodian of their goals and desires."
Jeers broke out among the crowd. "Let's understand we have to move forward," he said. "[O]ur campaign comes to an end." He added, "The cause endures. It is a fight worth having."
Hayworth has said he'll support the Arizona Republican ticket but not McCain personally.
“I do live in Arizona an McCain has driven me crazy for years, but his conservative rating is 80%”
True. But JD’s rating is 98%! As for the 80%, he only has that because he votes with the Republicans on issues that DON’T MATTER. On all important issues, he votes with the Left. He has ZERO credibility. Zero.
Not necessarily, sport. There is a large number of Independents in Az and many are on the left. They get to vote for either side in the primary. THEY helped elect Juan McLiberal.
In a closed primary situation, JD would prolly be the nominee. The Republicans have tried to get rid of the crossovers, but so far have failed.
McCain is another old political hack that needs to retire. What sucks is too many of the voting populace can't see it. If McCain retains his senate seat Obama has another supporter. Bank on it.
Yes they have. McCain trounced Hayworth by more than 20 percentage points.
Governor Palin supports John McCain and he will be our representative for the Republican Party in the upcoming election.
Do you want the Liberal Democrats to win? Remember that Ronald Reagan said, "Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican".
Anyone who wants McCain to win is a traitor.
I am so sick and tired of reading the BS sob stories of Freepers complaining about John McCain and his victory over JD Hayworth this week in the Arizona primary election. Look, fools, I do not like John McCain. I think he ran a very weak campaign against America hating POTUS Obama. He had the opportunity to nail him when the Rev. Jeremiah Wright story broke. But, he whimped out like a weakling at best. However, NY has a great two word saying (S__t Happens). And....John McCain is the Republican candidate for the US Senate from Arizona. So.....you folks better cut out the carping and vote for him!!! Why? For two reasons!!! One, JD Hayworth had his chance and lost fair & square. Number two, more importantly, this upcoming election is most likely the most important election many of us will ever participate in. For goodness sakes, our country hangs in the balance of destruction by an American hating, POTUS, Barack Hussein Obama. You better think about yourselves, your children and your grandchildren. JA Hayworth should act like a man with dignity and grace, and support John McCain. Most Arizona voters will be voting for John McCain. He won fair & square. He must be elected to the US Senate this November, 2010 so that the Republican Party can win Senate control and begin the destruction of POTUS Obama, his America hating ilk and the anti-American Democrat Party!!! Stop the BS ranting....and...save our great and maginifcent country!!! End of story!!!
The liberal democrats seemed to have voted for Juan McCain.
I did not know they can crossover in the primaries.
And this is why Free Republic has jumped the shark. They hate McCain more than they love their country.
To be entirely fair, to hate McCain IS to love your country.
But your premise is false.
That's not why RINOs get elected."
Okay, WHY do RINO's keep getting re-elected? (Other than the RNC funds their campaigns and outspends any non-establishment candidates in the Primaries)????
Please explain. McBane has lots of personal wealth, can meander as he pleases, and will do as he has always done—severely shaft America.
His is a false hope.
Earth to chiller: McCain is a Dem.
I fear that he will help usher in amnesty as his legacy...
Listen, McCain is worried about his legacy. Right now, he doesn’t have a good one...He is not stupid. He will stay mostly to the right.
J.D. nasty? Not at all. You would have had to follow the primary from the beginning to understand just how low down and desperate the McCain campaign was from the start.
Thank you. From someone who worked very hard to defeat McCain for all the reasons you state...I agree that this nonstop negativity has got to end. However, it doesn’t matter what non-Arizonans say about McCain. He’ll win. His Democrat opponent is a political neophyte with no money. It’s a done deal...But this carping has got to stop. WE MUST PULL TOGETHER FOR NOVEMBER...WE HAVE NO CHOICE. The time to make a statement is over.
No, what you get is the D voting 99 - 100% with their party and NEVER reaching across the aisle to acknowledge or even attempt to work with Republicans.
Yes, we have some horrible RINOs in the Senate, but, at least every once in a while, they do vote with their party.
This reasoning is so flawed, IMO. Funny thing is, up until the healthcare vote, there were those deemed bluedog Democrats, who may have voted NO, but, Pelosi threatened them. So, they towed the party line.
That’s what you get with a D. Total party goosestep. I think this must be the kind of thinking that allowed the Hitlers and Mussolinis to come to power. No politician is 100% truthful, regardless of whether there is an R or D beside the name.
I'd rather have NO RINO's, and at least we can be sure we won't be fooled by some Democrat that runs as a Republican, and votes like Specter or Snowe or Collins, etc.
