WASHINGTON -- New requests for unemployment benefits fell sharply last week after rising in the past three weeks. Still, claims remain much higher than they would be in a healthy economy.

The Labor Department said new claims for jobless aid dropped by 31,000 to a seasonally adjusted 473,000. Wall Street economists had expected a smaller drop, according to surveys by Thomson Reuters.

And the total unemployment benefit rolls are still climbing, as more people join extended unemployment aid programs that were renewed last month by Congress.

Egad. Words fail.

At this rate, we will have all the leisure we can handle for the rest of our lives.

So when a trauma patient is slowly bleeding out their past pint, that's a good thing?

We may have to become illegal immigrants to get jobs in China.

"Running out of jobs to destroy."

Absolutely. If everyone was unemployed then new jobless claims would drop to zero and the NY Times would be telling us everything is peaches and cream.

ahhhh....but they also saved 3.3 million jobs from going to unemployment. That is a new made up statistic that only Democraps can use....

AND, don’t you dare ask how they arrive at that number because it is none of your business.

Futures spike immediately as the economy is now losing just around 73k jobs per month instead of the expected 100k, truly a miraculous result. Continuing claims come at 4,456k on expectations of 4,496k, as yet again more unemployed move to the extended ranks: extended rise by 102k and EUC by just under 200k. The US transition to a welfare state continues 300k jobless at a time, and 2.1 million (in EUC + Extended) since July 9.

- zero hedge

“Our ship is coming into port...slowly.” Joe Biden
How you crow about a number like this I’ll never know but the propaganda machine is making an attempt and it’s falling on deaf ears.

This news will cause Obama to order lobster thermidor tonight with brandy sauce on the side.

Then again he would have gone for lobster thermidor anyway.
