Chilean miners trapped underground could be too fat to fit through 26 inch escape hole by Christmas

Chilean authorities fear that the 33 miners trapped underground might get too fat to fit through the escape shaft at Christmas.
Incredibly, the miners survived the 17 days before they were located by each eating two spoons of tuna, a few sips of milk and half a biscuit every 48 hours.
But with those starvation rations now over there are fears that the group will put on weight due a lack of exercise in the very confined space, according to Health Minister Jaime Manalich.
It has also emerged today that the owners of the mine failed to install an emergency ladder which would have allowed the men to escape.
Inspectors ordered bosses to build the ladder following a similar cave-in two years ago in which a man died.
But when the miners tried to reach the surface through a ventilation shaft marked on a map as an escape route, they discovered the ladder was not in place.
Mining minister Laurence Goldborne said he believed the workers would have got out within 48 hours of the cave-in if the ladder had been installed.
One of the trapped miners, shift foreman Luis Urzua, 54, told rescue workers: 'We attempted to get up through the air shaft, but as it didnt have a ladder we aborted.'
The miners have been trapped half a mile underground since August 5 following a cave-in at the San Jose mine in Copiapo, 500 miles north of the capital Santiago.

If they didn’t feed them for a couple of weeks they’d fit.

Well... I’m sure that by Christmas most of them will be small enough to fit through the hole...

I hope that these guys don’t kill each other.
Wonder what the sanitation situation might be. They might kill themselves it could get so bad.
They better be getting PAID...?

I don’t understand. Can’t someone put a ladder DOWN the airshaft?
If the airshaft can fit a ladder, then... ?

That would be horrible. One might die from stress or a medical condition too. That would be a nightmare. They could send salt down to pack a corpse in I suppose but the psychological factor would be off the charts.

33 men a half mile underground in a space about the size of a small apartment for 3 weeks already and as long as another 4 months before they're rescued.
I'd rather die.
But killing yourself wouldn't be a personal matter because your rotting body would probably kill everyone else.

If Christmas is the birth of life, maybe it won’t play to well with the miners.

NASA can provide them with reading material about the contributions of Islam to science and math. If one of them reads it aloud to all the rest that takes care of ten minutes.

The psychological factor is off the charts already. Think Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat, but probably worse.

I’m not getting that either. 2,600 ft. is a looong ladder, but why can’t they lower a cable down the air shaft and winch them out?

Rig a harness and boom to an oilfield wireline truck (call Schlumberger or Weatherford). They use these to run tools 15000+ ft in oil wells, they should be able to bring a miner up, if they can get the truck to the shaft opening and rig a boom. Wire in a headset so they can talk with the guy on the way out to avoid grinding him up on the walls of the hole. Allowing for clearance, 20-24 inches isn't very much room for even a standing man, but in the days when I tore shirts open running jackhammers and air drills, I could still wiggle through an 18 inch pipe. A harness with some sort of abrasion shield around it, a headset with piped in commo and/or soothing music might make the trip out a little easier to bear.
The wireline truck is equipped with tensionometers already to indicate when tools hang up in the hole, and wiring in communications should not be any real trouble, and the wireline already contains conductors for tools to send data to the truck's computers.

Chilean miners trapped underground could be too fat to fit through 26 inch escape hole by ChristmasSort of like when you hear about a 1,000-pound guy who has beenridden for years. Who keeps feedin' the guy six extra-large pizzas daily? Yeah, they're bored down there, but don't keep lowering down boxes of twinkies.

Then Goody peeped in at the hole, and called down--"Timmy Tiptoes! Oh fie, Timmy Tiptoes!" And Timmy replied, "Is that you, Goody Tiptoes? Why, certainly!" He came up and kissed Goody through the hole; but he was so fat that he could not get out.

That would be a half mile long ladder. I am sure the ladder that should have been installed was to have been permanent steps in the side of the vent shaft.
