Mehlman arrived at this conclusion about his identity fairly recently, he said in an interview

Some how I find that a little difficult to believe.

I don't know. I've had several acquaintances over the years "come out" and in both cases, the response from friends was, "What took you so long!"

I think was a poor choice of words.

Had they said: "he long had doubts regarding his sexual preference, but decided to finally come out of the closet recently"

That sounds to me like a more appropriate phrasing and one I would not have even quibbled with.
