22-year-old Miss Universe quickly embraces role as ambassador for native Mexico

LAS VEGAS (AP) — From flags to Facebook, 22-year-old Jimena Navarrete has quickly made it clear what she plans to promote as the world's newest Miss Universe — her home country of Mexico.

"I want the whole world to know about my country and my people," the Guadalajara native said after beating 82 competitors for global bragging rights at the pageant in Las Vegas.

"I imagine that they're all going crazy in Mexico right now," she said through an interpreter. "I'm extremely proud and I'm sure they're very proud, too."

I have to ask what is wrong with pride in one’s country, and for one’s fellow countrymen? This event is bigger in smaller countries than it it here.

This was something that always amused me when we lived in Venezuela: the Venezolanos were so proud that “there’s no racial discrimination in Venezuela”, yet it always seemed the lighter-skinned Venezuelans got the best jobs in government and had the most influence. You rarely saw a mestizo or an indio in any sort of position of authority.
