LA Unveils $578M School, Costliest in the Nation
ABC News ^ | August 23, 2010 | Christina Hoag

Next month's opening of the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools will be auspicious for a reason other than its both storied and infamous history as the former Ambassador Hotel, where the Democratic presidential contender was assassinated in 1968.

With an eye-popping price tag of $578 million, it will mark the inauguration of the nation's most expensive public school ever.

The K-12 complex to house 4,200 students has raised eyebrows across the country as the creme de la creme of "Taj Mahal" schools, $100 million-plus campuses boasting both architectural panache and deluxe amenities.

"There's no more of the old, windowless cinderblock schools of the '70s where kids felt, 'Oh, back to jail,'" said Joe Agron, editor-in-chief of American School & University, a school construction journal. "Districts want a showpiece for the community, a really impressive environment for learning."

Not everyone is similarly enthusiastic.

"New buildings are nice, but when they're run by the same people who've given us a 50 percent dropout rate, they're a big waste of taxpayer money," said Ben Austin, executive director of Parent Revolution who sits on the California Board of Education. "Parents aren't fooled."

How in the world were kids ever able to learn to read, write, and cipher in simple one-room schoolhouses? I mean, without computers on every desk, giant TVs in every room, Olympic-size swimming pools, and Astroturf playing fields, how is it even possible to learn the simplest of subjects?

More pictures of the performing arts high school here.

What will they do to top this extravagance?

Ugly building.

Art doesn’t HAVE to be ugly to be impressive.

That school is actually a different one - a few miles from this new one. It opened last year and cost a mere $232 million, but that’s cause it’s only for high schoolers, not K-12. Its name is “Central Los Angeles Area High School #9.”

Thanks for the pics. The cost is obscene and the building really ugle. And they had to get someone from Austria to design it! They make me sick.

The pricey schools have come during a sensitive period for the nation's second-largest school system: Nearly 3,000 teachers have been laid off over the past two years, the academic year and programs have been slashed. The district also faces a $640 million shortfall and some schools persistently rank among the nation's …

What are they thinking - it’s only money?

Yes, I realize it's a different school. It's the one in the picture that Drudge has on his site. In that sense, Drudge's posting is misleading.

But it's illustrative of the thinking of the LA school district.

There's also the "Belmont Learning Complex," a nearby high school which opened in 2008. It cost over $400 million.

I don't know if you're familiar with the area, but all three of these schools are in hardcore illegal alien territory. Also just a few miles away is the high school where that reconquista teacher Ron Gochez teaches. The whole area has been handed over.

Reparations. That’s it. After prop 187 was killed in the late 90’s a big group of lefty Hispanics gained a lot of political power and formed this big ethnic network, allied with the usual progressive dirtbags in the region. These schools are fruits of their labor.

And they’re not being paid for by the people in the areas they serve, they’re being paid for mostly by the resented whites who dared to try to protect their own state and cities.

Well, not exactly or entirely handed over.

We still need to pay for it.

Let me see, $850 million for the Martin Luther King Hospital, $230 million for one school, $400 million for another school, $500 million for the next school in such a great location...

Gee, pretty soon it all adds up.

Pretty soon you’re talking real money.

"Districts want a showpiece for the community,

Couldn't that goal be better accomplished by graduating students who are proficient in the three "Rs"? The only thing the building is a showcase for, is the architect and builder.

lol

Biggest waste of money ever.

Here is what they SHOULD of done.

They should of spent 78 Million building the school, then put the other 500 Million in a CD drawing 5% interest which would of made them 25 Million a year in interest. With that 25 Million a year they could of hired 200 college level professors with PhD’s to teach the 4,000 students there with a class size of 20 kids per teacher and paid them $100,000 each AND still had 5 million a year for other expenses like utilities. If they had done this... they would still have the 500 Million and probably would of been able to cut school district property taxes and would of had the best teachers in the nation teaching their kids.

A building never taught anyone anything, the teachers are the critical component.

I'm actually glad this montrosity was built, as it gives overt visual evidence of the takeover of America by foreigners/illegals, and brings home the cost of illegal immigration to the common man.

Maybe this will be a learning aid that wakes him up from his apolitical stupor, and finally makes him angry.
